Dover, Del. - Delaware State University Director of Athletics Candy Young has been honored by the Black Women in Sport Foundation. Young, DSU’s first female athletics director, was one of six honorees during the foundation’s annual Legends reception in Philadelphia last week.

Young, a former U.S. Olympic athlete, served as a Delaware State University head coach, Senior Woman Administrator and Associate AD before being appointed by DSU President Harry L. Williams as the school’s Director of Athletics in August 2012.

In addition to Young, the Black Women in Sport Foundation honored Dr. Chanelle Bishop (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia); Jacquie Carpenter (CIAA Commissioner); Deidre Downes (Delaware Investments); Robert Coleman (Phila. School District); and Benita Fitzgerald (USA Track & Field) during its 2013 Legends reception.

The Black Women in Sport Foundation was founded in 1992 by Tina Sloan Green, Alpha Alexander, Nikki Franke, and Linda Greene as a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the involvement of Black women and girls in all aspects of sport, including athletics, coaching and administration. The Foundation is resolute in facilitating the involvement of women of color in every aspect of sport in the United States and around the world, through the "hands-on" development and management of grass roots level outreach programs.
