UMES loses Doubleheader to Delaware State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to Delaware State in the opener 10-1, before the squad had an 8-5 loss pinned on them in game two. Although each team is a representative of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division, the games were not played as MEAC contests.

UMES (11-23) was led by freshman Vanessa Gomez, who had three hits, three stolen bases and two runs scored. Gomez and senior Belen Benitez each connected for triples in the match, while five Lady Hawks recorded multi-hit contests in at least one game. Benitez and senior Carmen Gurrola were each saddled with the loss in their respective matches.

Stephanie Sarris picked up her sixth win of the year in the opener as he fanned eight and walked just three in the complete-game effort. Three DSU members had multi-hit games in game two, including Ashley Roberson. Delaware State notched three homeruns on the day.

UMES will take a little time off before the Lady Hawks travel to George Mason on Wednesday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m.

Lady Pirates lose two to George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Hampton University softball team dropped a doubleheader against George Mason on Tuesday at the George Mason Softball Complex, falling 3-1 in the first game before losing the second game 10-2 in five innings.

The Lady Pirates are now 18-21 on the season.

Hampton struck first in the top of the first inning of the first game, taking a 1-0 lead after sophomore Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) singled to right field, scoring freshman Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.), who walked earlier in the inning.

The Patriots were held scoreless through the first five innings, before pushing across three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brooke Blankenship doubled home a pair of runs, before Angela Maioran singled home Blankenship to put George Mason up 3-1.

Hampton had two hits in the first game.

Sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out five batters in 5.1 innings of work. She has recorded at least five strikeouts in 17 of her last 22 appearances.

The Lady Pirates had three hits in the second game.
