Hampton Edges Coppin State 3-2

HAMPTON, Va. -- Gabriel Ziller went 2-for-4 and scored a run, but Bianca Vallejo scored from third on a Coppin State throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning lifting Hampton to a 3-2 victory over the Eagles on Sunday at Pirate Field.

Diamond Ponds led off the Hampton seventh inning with a single and then stole second base, but she was thrown out at third base by Heather Josker when she tried to advance to third base on a fly out.

Vallejo walked and stole second base to move into scoring position. Taylor McCoy reached on a fielder's choice and Vallejo advanced to third and then came in to score the winning run on a CSU throwing error.

Hampton improved to 28-22 overall and 14-1 in the MEAC with the victory, while Coppin State dropped to 13-23 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Coppin State jumped out to an early lead against the Pirates with runs in the first and second inning.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ziller and Nicole Boggs hit back-to-back doubles with two outs.

Coppin State extended the lead to 2-0 in the second inning. Cheyenne Gerber led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Denlinger and scored when Lauren Rogers singled to right.

B-CU sweeps Lady Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kelsey Rodney drove in three runs, and was one of six Bethune-Cookman players with two hits as the Wildcats downed Savannah State 11-4 Sunday to conclude a sweep of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division series.

Shamaria Engram, Michelle Banuelos-Smith and Aurelia Gamch each had a solo home run for the Wildcats, who scored 39 runs this weekend to maintain their lead in the division. B-CU (16-31 overall, 10-1 MEAC) and Florida A&M (18-28,8-3) meet next weekend for the division’s top seed in the conference tournament May 9-11.

Simone Ceasar and Sophia Ortega also had two hits for the Wildcats, who had all nine batters register one hit in the team’s 15-hit day.

Shanel Tolbert (12-23) threw no-hit ball over the final five and one-third innings – retiring 13 straight at one point – to finish with a three-hitter.
