Bethune-Cookman wins two against Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman cranked out 28 runs Saturday to sweep Savannah State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader..

Kelsey Rodney drove in four runs, Michelle Banuelos-Smith three and Shamaria Engram hit a two-run homer as the Wildcats used a five-run third and six-run sixth to take the first game.

Savannah State led 4-2 after two innings, but Rodney’s two-run homer and Engram’s third round-tripper of the season keyed the B-CU third.

The Tigers closed to 7-6 in the fifth, but Rodney’s single and a two-run Banuelos-Smith helped the Wildcats push their lead to 13-6.

Rodney and Simone Ceasar each had three hits, while Aurelia Gamch and Banuelos-Smith added two. All nine Wildcat starters had at least one hit.

In game 2, Melissa Berouty drove in four runs and posted her first collegiate home run as all nine Wildcats scored in the five-inning game.

Down 1-0, B-CU scored four in the second on Berouty’s two-run shot to left and another two on an error. In the third, Berouty, Sophia Ortega and Wanda Darby had RBI singles to make it 7-1.

Savannah State closed to 7-3, but a six-run fifth clinched the game for B-CU. Calesha Shelley had a two-run double that inning.

Shanel Tolbert picked up both victories to improve to 8-23 on the season.

Lady Hornets Sweep Bison

Dover, Del. - Delaware State combined for 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Howard at the Hornets’ Nest today. DSU won the first game 10-0 and completed the sweep with an 18-3 victory in the nightcap. Each game was called after Howard batted in the fifth inning due to the eight 10-run rule.

In the opener, Rachel Meagley and Stephanie Sarris combined on a one-hitter, while Jess Madrid, Ashley Bennett and Sandy Hawthorne drove in two runs each.
Meagley struck out seven without allowing a walk in four innings. She gave up Howard’s only hit, a single by Alasia Davis in the fifth.

In the nightcap, six players drove in at least two runs for the Hornets.

Delaware State led 12-3 before adding three runs in the third inning. Jordan Stamps singled in two runs to give the Hornets a 15-3 lead.

DSU’s Kelsey Lewis had a pinch hit three-run triple in the fourth inning to close out the scoring.

Stephanie Sarris (9-9) threw a complete game to earn the win in the nightcap.

FAMU wins two against South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The Florida A&M Softball team got a pair of conference wins today as the Lady Rattlers blanked South Carolina State, 4-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two, here Saturday afternoon at Lady Bulldogs field in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.

FAMU (16-29, 8-3) was paced by Raven Mosley as she finished with two of the Lady Rattlers seven hits.

SCSU (16-25, 4-7) Mikala Johnson recorded the Lady Bulldogs only hits.

Jennifer Lindsey (11-19)  picked the win for the Lady Rattlers in game one as she gave up one hit,  and striking out eight in seven inning of work, while Vianney Gomez (13-12) received the loss for the Lady Bulldogs  a she pitched seven inning, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out two in the 35 batters she faced.

In game two, FAMU tallied seven hits, while SCSU recorded two hits in the contest.

Both Ashanti Shepherd and Brielle Gordon finished with two hits each to lead the Rattlers, while Taylor-Anne Harris recorded both of the Lady Bulldogs hits on the day.

Ashleigh Minter (5-10) picked up the win for FAMU as she pitched seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out two in the 23 batters she faced, while Jazmine Robinson received the loss (0-8) allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out four in the seven innings of work.

Hampton Wins Doubleheader against Coppin State

HAMPTON, Va. -- Bobbi Langlois hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifting Hampton to a 3-2 victory over Coppin State in game two and a sweep of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Pirates Field.

Margaret Wilkins was placed on second to begin the inning and the Eagles intentionally walked Bianca Vallejo. Langlois then lined a single down the leftfield line giving the Pirates the victory.

The Pirates (27-22, 13-1 MEAC) defeated Coppin State 9-1 in the opening game of the doubleheader. Vallejo and Taylor McCoy each drove in two runs to lead Hampton, while Jailynn Jackson limited the Eagles to four hits and one run in six innings of work.

Heather Josker homered to lead off the game for Coppin State and Cheyenne Gerber added two hits for the Eagles.

Coppin State (13-22, 6-8 MEAC) had eight hits in game two led by Kimberlynn Brown who was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nicole Boggs also drove in a run for CSU.

Melli Richardson went the distance in game two for the Eagles as she allowed 10 hits and two earned runs in 9.1 innings.
