MEAC Women?s Tennis Championship Finals Matchup Set

Raleigh, N.C., April 20, 2013- The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs and the Morgan State Lady Bears will compete in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Tennis Championship Final on Sunday, April 21 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Millbrook Tennis Center.

The reigning MEAC Champion Lady Bulldogs, who entered as the top seed in the south, defeated No. 3 Bethune-Cookman 4-0 in the semifinals. South Carolina State took an early 1-0 lead going in to singles play after winning doubles at the number one (8-1) and number three (8-1) spots.

In singles action, the Lady Bulldogs won in straight sets at the number three and five spots as Klara Dohnalova topped B-Cu’s Gaby Chinchilla and Victoria Khatcei defeated Maria Dimitrova. SCSU’s Kateryna Nakonechna earned the deciding point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Valentina Beresiarte. The Bulldogs will compete for their ninth straight MEAC women’s tennis title, 10th overall.

Morgan State, the top seed in the north, defeated North Carolina Central 4-2 to advance to the MEAC Tennis Championship Finals. The Lady Bears won the doubles point with the tandems of Mi’Kola Cooper, Chelsi Russell and Ekaterina Iakovelva, Margarita Belyakova getting the victory.

North Carolina Central won points at the number two and three positions in singles play to make the match tight. But Morgan State earned points at the number one, five, and six positions to win the match and move on to the finals.

Morgan State is looking to win its first MEAC women’s tennis title since 1994.
