MEAC Tennis Championships: Day One

#1 South Carolina State 4, #4 Hampton 0

The defending MEAC women’s champion South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs defeated Hampton in the first round of the 2013 MEAC Women’s Tennis Championship.

After capturing the doubles point, the Lady Bulldogs won at the number one, five and six positions to win the match.

The Lady Bulldogs advance to the semifinals and will play Bethune-Cookman at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.

#1 Morgan State 4, #4 Florida A&M 0

The top seeded Morgan State Lady Bears advanced to the semifinal round with 4-0 victory over Florida A&M.

Morgan State won three points at the number one, two, and four singles position. They captured their fourth point in doubles play.

The Lady Bears will take on North Carolina Central tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

#2 Howard vs. #3 Bethune-Cookman

The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats battled to a 4-2 win over Howard to move on to the semifinals.

The Lady Wildcats took an early lead winning the doubles play point to go into singles play with a 1-0 advantage. Howard fought back, winning matches at the number one and five positions to keep the match close. But the Bethune-Cookman sealed up the win winning at the second, third, and sixth position.

The Lady Wildcats move on to play South Carolina State in the semifinal round tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

#2 North Carolina Central vs. No. 3 Delaware State

North Carolina Central and Delaware State battled for a spot in the semifinal round of the MEAC Women’s Tennis Championship.

Delaware State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point over the Lady Eagles. North Carolina Central rattled off wins at positions one through four with NCCU’s Rebecca Wood taking a 6-1, 6-3 win in the fourth position to the Lady Eagles to tomorrow’s semifinals.

North Carolina Central will battle Morgan State tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for a chance to move to the finals.

#2 South Carolina State vs. #3 Coppin State

The South Carolina State Bulldogs moved on to the semifinal round of the Men’s MEAC Tennis Championships with a 4-0 victory over Coppin State.

The Bulldogs went up 1-0 early with a double play win. South Carolina State captured three points at the number two, three, and six positions to take the match.

South Carolina State will play Bethune-Cookman in the semifinals tomorrow at Noon.

#1 Morgan State vs. #4 Bethune-Cookman

The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats started the MEAC Tennis Tournament off with a 4-0 upset of top seeded Morgan State.

Bethune-Cookman won doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. The Wildcats went up 3-0 with wins at the number three and number six positions. B-CU’s Leonardo Lima defeated Eric Ward 6-4, 6-4 to win the final point.

Bethune-Cookman will meet South Carolina State in the semifinals tomorrow at noon.

#2 Hampton vs. #3 Norfolk State

Norfolk State advanced to the semifinal round with a 4-0 win over crosstown rival Hampton at the MEAC Tennis Championships.

NSU’s Dimitry Zyhmantovich and Peter Ramstromer-Pello won their doubles match 8-0 to capture the double point to go up 1-0. The Spartans captured points at the number one, two, and four singles positions to take the win.

Norfolk State will take on Florida A&M tomorrow at Noon for a chance to move to the finals.

#1 Florida A&M vs. #4 Howard

The Florida A&M Rattlers defeated Howard 4-0 in the first round of the MEAC Men’s Tennis Championship.

Florida A&M captured an early 1-0 lead winning the first two doubles matches. The Rattlers finished out the match with straight set wins at the number one, four, and five positions to move on to the semifinals.

Florida A&M will face Norfolk State tomorrow at Noon. Florida A&M, South Carolina State, and Norfolk State were southern division co-champions.
