Delaware State Snaps Coppin State Softball Winning Streak
BALTIMORE -- Danielle Smith, Heather Josker and Kimberlynn Brown each had two hits, but Delaware State had 32 hits on its way to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Coppin State on Saturday at the Coppin State Field.
The Hornets (14-23, 6-2 MEAC) had 15 hits in a 7-2 game one victory and then had 17 hits in a 21-1 win in game two.
Sandy Hawthorne had six hits and drove in eight runs to lead Delaware State, while Miranda Pedersen had three hits and seven RBI.
Delaware State scored three times in the fourth inning and once in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Game two was all Hornets from the outset as they scored nine runs in the first inning, six times in the second and two runs in the third inning to take a 17-1 lead.
Coppin State had its five-game losing streak snapped and fell to 13-19 overall and 6-5 in the MEAC Northern Division.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m. at the Coppin State Field.

North Carolina Central Splits with South Carolina State
DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team captured its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory as the Lady Eagles split the doubleheader match-up with the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University, 4-2 and 4-0 on Saturday, in Durham, N.C., at Parkwood Athletic Field.
During game two, senior pitcher Bianka Molina earned her first victory and the Lady Eagles first shutout of the season after she pitched a complete seven innings, gave up six hits, no runs, walked two batters and struck out eight.
NCCU put the first run of the game on the board during the second inning after junior transfer Camille Hampton earned her second double of the afternoon down the left field line.
NCCU collected eight hits and earned all four runs off of Lady Bulldog pitcher Vianney Gomez during game two while committing no errors.
In game one of the doubleheader rookie London Booker threw a complete game for the Lady Eagles during the first contest, giving up 10 hits, four runs, two earned runs, walking one SCSU batter and striking out six.
