NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Thea Aspiras of the Norfolk State bowling team was named honorable mention All-America by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) late Wednesday night at the NCAA Championship banquet.
It marks the second time in her career Aspiras has earned some sort of All-America distinction. She was tabbed to the NTCA All-America second team after her freshman year in 2011, becoming NSU’s first-ever All-American.
Aspiras earned first-team All-MEAC honors for the third straight year in 2013 and was a two-time MEAC Bowler of the Week. She was named the MVP of the Hampton Roads Invitational at the beginning of the season and also earned a spot on the Prairie View A&M Invitational All-Tournament Team in early February.
A native of nearby Chesapeake, Va., Aspiras leads the Spartans with a 201.7, the third year in a row she has carried the top average on the team. She has led NSU to a 63-33 overall record so far this year, the MEAC Southern Division crown for the third time in three years, and a berth in next weekend’s USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship April 18-20.
NSU will finish out its season at the championship next weekend, the program’s first-ever appearance at either the NCAA or the USBC championship.
