Coppin State Sweeps Virginia State

BALTIMORE -- Alyssa Barker pitched a three-hit shutout in game one and drove in two runs in game two leading Coppin State to a doubleheader sweep of Virginia State on Wednesday at the Coppin State Softball Field.

Coppin State (13-17) won the opener 3-0 and completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in game two.

Barker went the distance in game one as she allowed just three hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter in seven innings of works. Barker, who has won three straight decisions, improved to 5-8 on the season.

In game two, Barker was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the Eagles. Coppin State took an 8-2 lead after three innings and then held off a late charge from Virginia State.

Coppin State took advantage of a Virginia State throwing error in the bottom of the second inning of game one to get on the board.

Brown, Boggs, Barker, Brandi Davis all had RBIs for the Eagles in the inning.

Virginia State (14-17) scored three times in the final two innings, but Samantha Denlinger was able to get two ground outs to end the game and pick up her first save of the season.

NCCU Drops Doubleheader To College Of Charleston

DURHAM, N.C.  – Despite Camille Hampton’s two-run homerun during the bottom of the seventh inning in game one, the North Carolina Central University softball team lost a doubleheader match-up between the College of Charleston Cougars 8-2 and 8-0 in Durham, N.C., at Parkwood Athletic Field.  

Emerie Germ started the inning with a single up the middle before she was replaced on the bases by Martha Batie. Hampton then came to the plate, scoring the Lady Eagles only runs in the series with a homerun over the left field fence, scoring Batie.

Rookie pitcher London Booker (1-19), took home the 8-2 loss for NCCU after pitching 5.1 innings, giving up eight hits, six runs, five earned runs, three walks and striking out five CofC batters.

In the second match-up, the Lady Eagles offense earned three hits and was unsuccessful to convert any into runs, compared to the Cougars 12 hits and eight runs.

DSU Win Streak Snapped At Virginia

Charlottesville, Va. - Delaware State’s season-best seven-game win streak game to an end at Atlantic Coast Conference Virginia today. The Cavaliers took two from the Hornets 9-1 and 10-1.

In the opener, Virginia’s Melanie Mitchell tossed a five-hit complete game to earn the win.  The Cavaliers opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning, highlighted by Marcy Bowdren’s three-run double.

Delaware State cut Virginia’s lead to 5-1 with a run in the top of the fourth. Kelsey Lewis singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double by Sandy Hawthorne.

The Cavaliers scored two runs on the fourth and fifth innings, bringing an end to the game due to the eight-run rule.

In the nightcap, the Hornets got on the board first with the run in the opening inning. Jess Madrid started the rally with a one-out single. She moved to third base on two wild pitches and came home on a single by Rochelle Sablay.

Madrid had two of the Hornets’ five hits in the nightcap.

Ospreys Outlast B-CU 4-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Calesha Shelley had two hits and Shamaria Engram homered for Bethune-Cookman in its 4-2 loss to North Florida Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats (11-29)  took a 1-0 first inning lead when Shelley led off with a single, stole second and scored on a throwing error, but the Ospreys (30-11) answered with a three-run homer by Mariah Reynolds in the bottom half of the inning.

North Florida upped its lead to 4-1 in the fourth before Engram’s leadoff homer to left in the fifth. It was Engram’s second home run of the season.

Kelsey Rodney accounted for the Wildcats’ other hit with a sixth-inning double.

Shanel Tolbert took the loss, giving up six hits while walking three and striking out four.
