HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team can boast something else on top of its collection of championship hardware: the nation’s best scoring defense.
In the final Division I rankings released by the NCAA on Wednesday, the Lady Pirates lead the nation in scoring defense after holding opponents to just 47.8 points per game this past season. On top of that, Hampton’s last 10 opponents managed just 41.2 points per game – with only two of those 10 teams cracking the 50-point barrier.
The Lady Pirates are also third in Div. I in field goal percentage defense (.320, 572-for-1,786) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (.243, 98-for-404), while their +6.38 turnover margin is the fifth-best in the nation.
