MEAC Announces Tennis Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va. -  Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel and Morgan State’s Ekaterina Iakovleva were chosen as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Athletes of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Morgan State’s Chelsi Russell and Norfolk State’s Robin Riethmueller were named the Women’s and Men's Rookies of the Week, respectively.  

Grauel (So., Munich, Germany) tallied a 2-0 record with wins over Maryland Eastern Shore (6-0, 6-0) and Richmond (6-3, 6-4) at the number six position. He and teammate Samuel Lemberger defeated Coppin State (8-3) and Maryland Eastern Shore (8-1) for a pair of wins in number three doubles play.

Iakovleva (Jr., Vladivostok, Russia) extended her singles winning streak to 16 and improved to 17-2 on the season with number one singles wins over Mount St. Mary’s (6-0, 6-2) and Delaware State (6-2, 6-2). She partnered with Margarita Belyakova at the number two doubles spot to earn an 8-2 victory over Mount St. Mary’s and an 8-3 win over Delaware State.

Russell (Fr., Nassau, Bahamas) earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Mount St. Mary’s and a 7-5, 7-5 win over Delaware State’s Vanja Andonova in number two singles action. She teamed with Mi’Kola Cooper in number one doubles play, defeating Mount St. Mary’s 8-2 and Delaware State 8-5.

Riethmueller (Fr., Balingen, Germany) and teammate Igor Braga went undefeated in number three doubles play as the pair posted wins over Coppin State (8-0), Maryland Eastern Shore (8-0) and Richmond (8-4). In number two singles action, he tallied wins over Maryland Eastern Shore (6-0, 6-0) and Richmond (6-3, 6-4).

Other Top Performers:

Gabby Chincilla (B-CU) defeated Georgia Southern’s Stephanie Woods in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 10-7) to win the only point for the Lady Wildcats.

Yvonne Kamegne (NSU) was 4-1 on the week with number three singles wins over Coppin State (6-0, 6-0), Maryland Eastern Shore (6-0, 6-0) and Towson (6-0, 6-2).

Leonardo Lima (B-CU) was 2-0 in singles play last week with wins over Florida Atlantic University (6-3, 6-3) and Florida Gulf Coast (6-3, 6-3).

Andrea Macchiavello (NSU) had a 6-3, 6-0 win over Coppin State at the number one spot and an 8-5  number one doubles victory over Towson.

Katelyn Stokes (Howard) recorded number one singles wins over George Mason (6-0, 6-2) and Coppin State (6-0, 6-1). She and partner Talia Johnson recorded a number one doubles victory over Coppin State (8-1) and fell to George Mason (6-7).
