MEAC ANNOUNCES SOFTBALL WEEKLY HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – April 1, 2013 – Norfolk State sophomore Haley Ward earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in softball, the conference announced on Monday. South Carolina State’s Vianney Gomez was named Pitcher of the Week and Norfolk State’s Whitney Williams earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Ward (OF, 5-7, So., Virginia Beach, Va.) batted .778 (7-for-9) over three games to aid the Spartans in a 3-0 conference sweep of Howard. She hit a perfect 2-for-2 with a homerun, four RBI and stole a base in the 10-0 series opener. Ward tripled in her first at bat of the second game to tie the NCAA Division I record of 13 straight hits set by Boston University's April Setterland in 2010.

Gomez (P, 5-4, Jr., Antioch, Calif.)earned two wins with a 0.00 ERA in 14.0 innings of work last weekend in a conference series against North Carolina A&T. Gomez faced 33 batters in a 6-4 win, striking out six while allowing seven hits, and walking one. She retired three batters and allowed two hits and two walks to pick up her second victory in her eighth complete game of the year.

Williams (3B, 5-6, Fr., Four Oaks, N.C.)scored two runs, doubled, had four RBI and stole a base while hitting .429 (3-for-7) last week. The rookie added a putout and four assists defensively as the Spartans swept Howard in the three game series.

Alyssa Barker (CSU) posted a 0.54 ERA in 13.0 innings to help the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 conference series sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Cianna Burt (SCSU) doubled and drove in three runs in a 6-4 win over North Carolina A&T.

Simone Caesar (B-CU) hit .625 (5-for-8) with two runs scored, a double and two RBI in two wins over North Carolina Central.

Brelle Gordon (FAMU) scored six runs, added three RBI and stole four bases while hitting .473 (9-for-19) in five game for the Rattlers.

Sandy Hawthorne (DSU) doubled and drove in two RBI in a .667 (2-for-3) effort to lead the Lady Hornets to a 3-2 win over Hampton.

Mikala Johnson (SCSU) scored two runs, collected two doubles and five RBI while hitting .400 (4-for-10) as the Lady Bulldogs took two of three games against North Carolina A&T.

Jennifer Lindsey (FAMU) pitched three and two-third scoreless innings in a 14-6 win over Savannah State.

Taylor McCoy (Hampton) finished the week batting .667 (6-for-9) with three runs scored, three doubles, a triple and six RBI in three games for the Lady Pirates.

India Morgan (SSU) was .500 (10-for-23) with two runs scored in three games for the Lady Bulldogs.

Jamie Schulle (NSU) allowed two hits and struck out seven to record a 0.00 ERA over 5.0 innings to help the Spartans to a 14-0 win over Howard.

Danielle Smith (CSU) helped the Eagles to a three game conference series sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore, batting .545 (6-for-11) with four runs scored, a double and four RBI.

Tikeya Strong (FAMU) hit .800 (4-for-5) with two runs scored, a double and two RBI in four games for the Rattlers.
