Morgan State Silences Lady Rattlers; Ends Regular Season Defeating FAMU, 72-60

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 7, 2013)- Morgan State closed out the regular season by defeating visiting Florida A&M, 72-60 in a MEAC season finale game on Thursday evening at Hill Field House.

The victory allowed the Lady Bears to secure the No. 6 seed in next week's MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va. Morgan State also finished with a perfect 3-0 mark on their season-ending homestand and upped its winning streak to a season-long four games to end the regular season.

Morgan State (12-17, 9-7 MEAC), who entered the contest tied with Florida A&M for sixth-place in the league standings, got a game-high 25 points from senior Bianca Jarrett.  Jarrett, who was one of four seniors playing in her final home game at Hill Field House, scored 14 points in the second half and shot 7-of-17 from the floor, including five three-pointers.

Fellow senior Moneshia Davis scored nine points and had three assists, a team-high two blocks and recorded a game-high three steals, to give her 163 for her career. Sophomore Tracey Carrington came off the bench to score 11 points and had a game-high four assists, while freshman Dinah Jones also came off the bench and scored a season-high 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for the Lady Bears.

Florida A&M (11-18, 8-8 MEAC), which closed out the season dropping five of its last seven games, dropped to the seventh-seed for the MEAC Tournament. Jasmine Grice, who was coming off scoring a career-high 42 points in Monday's win at Norfolk State, led the Lady Rattlers with a team-high 19 points. Kimberly Sparkman finished with 14 points and Patrice Collie and Jamie Foreman each added 11 points in the loss.

Morgan State, which has now defeated the Lady Rattlers in seven of the last eight meetings, improved to 10-32 all-time against Florida A&M.

NSU Falls to North Carolina A&T, 62-47

NORFOLK, Va.-Norfolk State closed out the regular season with a 62-47 loss to North Carolina A&T on Thursday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Spartans fell to 4-12 in the MEAC and 6-21 overall, while N.C. A&T improved to 13-3 in the conference and 21-8 overall.

The Aggies finished the game shooting 43.4 (23-of-53) percent from the field. JaQuayla Berry had 12 points and six rebounds to lead N.C. A&T. Tracy King tallied 11 points and Ariel Bursey added 10 points, respectively.

The Spartans shot only 31.7 (19-of-60) percent on the night. Aside from Aivah Parham, Batavia Owens was the only other NSU player to score in double-figures. She posted her second consecutive double-double as she finished the game with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

The Spartans will open up MEAC Tournament play on Tuesday afternoon against Florida A&M at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m.

Lady Pirates Close Out Regular Season With Win Over NCCU

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton University closed out the 2012-13 regular season with its 16th straight win on Monday, beating North Carolina Central 51-30 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (25-5, 16-0 MEAC) went unbeaten in the MEAC for the first time in program history and became the first MEAC team to run the table in conference play since Coppin State in 2006-07.

Hampton also went 11-0 at home this season.

Senior forward Keiara Avant led the Lady Pirates with 22 points and 10 rebounds, recording her 19th double-double of the season, tops in the MEAC. She was 10-for-15 from the floor and grabbed four offensive rebounds.

Senior guard Olivia Allen had nine points.

NCCU (2-27, 2-14 MEAC) shot just 25.0 percent (10-for-40) from the floor and missed its only 3-point attempt of the night. The Lady Eagles did hold a 38-33 edge on the glass.

Chasidy Williams led North Carolina Central with 13 points.

The Lady Pirates will play in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament on Wednesday at Norfolk Scope, taking on the winner of the No. 8 Bethune-Cookman/No. 9 Delaware State first round game at 12 p.m.
