MEAC Announces Softball Honors

Hampton junior Margaret Wilkins earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in softball, the conference announced on Thursday. Bethune-Cookman's Shanel Tolbert was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Coppin State's Danielle Smith earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Wilkins (SS/C, 5-10, Jr., Tustin, Calif.) batted .750 (15-for-20) with one double, three home runs and seven RBI to aid the Lady Pirates to a 4-2 mark last week.  Against Grambling State, Wilkins was 3-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. Defensively, she recorded 14 putouts and 10 assists during the six games.

Tolbert (P, 5-6, Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) went 1-1 last week with a 1.75 ERA in 12.0 innings in the circle. Tolbert allowed seven runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out eight of 52 batters.

Smith (2B, 5-2, Fr., Rising Sun, Md.) recorded a.647 batting average in four games as the Lady Eagles posted a 3-1 record at the UMBC Retriever Classic. Smith went 4-for-5 with a run, a double, and an RBI in a 13-8 win over UMBC. For the week, she totaled eight runs, two doubles, and three RBI, while adding 15 putouts and eight assist on defense.

Alejandra Barcenas (NCAT)
led the Aggies in hits with five at the N.C. State Wolfpack Challenge.

Kathy Cortez (NSU) batted .353 (6-for-17) with two doubles and seven RBI to aid the Spartans to a 3-3 week.

Kelsey Doherty (DSU) was 7-for-18 (.389) with four runs and an RBI in five games for the Lady Hornets.

Vanessa Gomez (UMES) was 5-for-17 with a .375 average and five hits in six games for the Lady Hawks.

Brielle Gordon (FAMU) tallied four hits with three runs and one RBI over five games for the Lady Rattlers.

Madison Hedderly (SSU) pitched 14.0 innings with a 3.99 ERA, striking out six and posting a 1-1 mark last week.

Jailynn Jackson (Hampton) was 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA, striking out 25, in 27.1 innings for the Lady Pirates.

Morgan King (UMES) was 4-for-5 and hit for the cycle in an 11-10 loss to North Carolina A&T.

Michaela Patton (SSU) tallied a double, a home run and five RBI in three games for the Lady Tigers.  

Clara Quinones (NSU) batted .333 (3-for-9) with one run in four games for the Spartans.

Liz Riley (NSU) struck out five and walked six in 13.0 innings for the Spartans, posting a 3.77 ERA.

Jordan Stamps (DSU) was 5-for-16 with a triple and five RBI in five games for the Lady Hornets.

Torrian Wright (SSU) posted two doubles and two home runs with seven RBI, batting .556 (5-for-9) in three games for the Lady Tigers.
