NORFOLK, Va. - Ramon Mercado of Hampton was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week the conference announced on Monday. Rashid Gaston of Norfolk State earned Rookie of the Week honors for the second week in a row while Du'Vaughn Maxwell, also of Hampton, was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Mercado (G, 6-4, 205, Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) guided the Pirates to back-to-back wins over Delaware State and Florida A&M with 18 and 12 points respectively. He shot 5-of-11 from the field, with 2-of-4 from long range to add nine rebounds, one assist and one steal to his 12 point outing. He also shot 50-percent from the floor (7-of-14) against FAMU with six boards, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes of play.
Gaston (F, 6-8, 235, Fr., Warren, Ohio) recorded a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds in a 62-61 win over Bethune-Cookman. He connected on 50-percent of his shot attempts (4-of-8) and added one steal in 27 minutes of play to help secure the victory.
Maxwell (G/F, 6-7, 215, Jr., Manhattan, NY) recorded a combined 10 rebounds, five blocked shots and one steal in two conference wins last week. He recorded six rebounds and four blocked shots in a 77-68 win over Florida A&M. Offensively he posted 21 points and dished out one assist.
Other Top Performances
Adrien Coleman (B-CU) posted a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds along with four assists, two steals and one blocked shot in a 72-58 win over Savannah State.
Dwight Meikle (Hampton) averaged 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal in two wins for the Pirates last week.
Pendarvis Williams (NSU) recorded 14 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 62-61 win over Bethune-Cookman.
Austin Witter (NCAT) collected nine rebounds and four blocked shots and set the school's single-season blocked shots record with 86 total for the season.
