HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Battling at the number two and five courts, Savannah State played Siena College into two tie-breaker situations, at Van der Meer Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina Thursday. The Lady Saints closed out the tight sets with wins to beat the Lady Tigers 0-7.
At the number two position, SSU senior Esmira Gheisary fell in the opening set, 4-6 to Carly Holloway, but continued to fight in the second set. Gheisary forced a set tie-breaker with a 6-7 score. Holloway sealed up the win with a 7-5 decision in the tie-breaker.
In the fifth court, SSU senior Davita Washington dominated the opening set with a 6-2 victory over Jessica Macaluso. The senior was not as commanding in the second set, falling 0-6. In the third, tie-breaking set Macaluso downed Washington 10-4 for the match decision.
Junior Sandra Kristjansdottir played a tough first court, falling to Brittany Filip in close sets, 4-6 and 4-6. Newcomer Andrea Pavlovic dropped the third court 0-6 and 0-6 to Allysa Singh.
In the fourth position, sophomore Nicole Ashiedu fell to Maria Varano 1-6 and 4-6. Rounding out the singles play, freshman Tiffany Williams fell to Cassandra Braz 0-6 and 1-6 in the sixth court.
In doubles action, Gheisary and Pavlovic played Varano and Singh tough, falling 5-8. Kristjansdottir and Ashiedu fell to Macaluso and Braz 2-8. In the third court Washington and Williams fell, 0-8, to Filip and Benfer.
