MEAC Announces Softball Weekly Honors

Norfolk State sophomore Haley Ward earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in softball, the conference announced on Monday.  South Carolina State’s Vianney Gomez was named Pitcher of the Week and Hampton’s Taylor McCoy earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Ward (OF, 5-7, So., Virginia Beach, Va.) hit .909 (10-for-11) with one home run, one triple, four doubles and 12 RBI to aid the Spartans to a 3-0 conference series sweep of Coppin State. Ward was a perfect 4-for-4 and 3-for-3 in the second and third game of the series and posted a career-high five RBI in the last game of the series to extend her streak of hitting to 10 consecutive at-bats. Ward also stole two bases and tallied four putouts.

Gomez (P, 5-4, Jr., Antioch, Calif.) recorded a 0.60 ERA in 11.2 innings of action last week. In the first game against Maryland Eastern Shore, she struck out three while allowing five hits, one run and one unearned run. She followed with a .000 ERA in 4.2 innings while striking out four and allowing just two hits.

McCoy (P/1B, 5-11, Fr., Riverview, Fla.) aided Hampton in three wins against Morgan State last week. The rookie hit .545 (6-for-11) with three doubles, three runs scored and six RBI. Defensively, she added 26 putouts. 

Other Top Performers

Heather Dunning (NSU) hit .600 with one double and one RBI in 10 appearances at the plate for the Spartans.

Samantha Gale (B-CU) pitched 30.0 innings with a 4.67 ERA and earned three victories in five games last week for the Lady Wildcats.

Jasmine Greer (SCSU) was 3-for-7 (.428) with two doubles and four RBI in two games last week.

Carmen Gurrola (UMES) threw the first complete game shutout for UMES in four years in the Lady Hawks 15-0 win against Howard.

Taylor-Anne Harris (SCSU) hit .333 in two games for the Lady Bulldogs last week.

Jailynn Jackson (Hampton) led the Lady Pirates with a 2.62 ERA in 8.0 innings of action against Morgan State.

Morgan King (UMES) totaled two home runs, one double and five RBI in five games for the Lady Hawks.

Trenece Nash (UMES) hit .353 with one double and three RBI in five games.

McKalee Rouse (Hampton) batted .800 and was 4-for-5 with one RBI in two wins against Morgan State.

Jamie Schulle (NSU) allowed four hits, two unearned runs and to record a 1.45 ERA in three victories against Coppin State.
