MEAC Bowling Championship Recap: Day One

The MEAC completed the first day of the 2013 MEAC Bowling Championship at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The eight-team field competed in five traditional team games to determine seeding for the championship tournament.

The two-time defending NCAA Champion Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks earned the top seed heading into tomorrow’s action with a 5-0 mark and will face Morgan State in match one.

The Delaware State Lady Hornets earned the second seed with a 4-1 record and 4,772 pinfall. DSU will meet Hampton in match three.  

Florida A&M earned the third seed (4,525), followed by North Carolina A&T (4,417) in fourth. The defending MEAC champion Norfolk State Spartans captured the fifth seed with a total pinfall of 4,402. Bethune-Cookman (4,270), Hampton (4,192) and Morgan State (3,982) earned the sixth through eighth seeds, respectively.

No. 4 North Carolina A&T will take on the No. 5 Norfolk State in match two while No. 3 Florida A&M will face No. 6 Bethune-Cookman in match four.

Matches begin tomorrow at 8:20 a.m. with teams competing in a best-of-seven Baker series.

The MEAC bowling championship wraps up on Sunday at 10 a.m. beginning with the semifinal round and concluding with the championship final at 11:45 a.m. The championship match will be televised in a tape-delayed format and will air on ESPNU on April 1 at 10:30 p.m.

Admission to the bowling championship is free and open to the public.

Traditional Game #1

Maryland Eastern Shore  918, Bethune-Cookman 846

Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Bethune-Cookman in the first of five traditional team games. The Lady Hawks were led by Megan Buja, who bowled a 207, and MEAC Bowler of the Year Anggie Ramirez, who bowled a 200. Uptrecia Crumity led the Lady Wildcats with a 180.

Delaware State 1047, Florida A&M 831
Ashlen Kuhar bowled a 247 to lead Delaware State past Florida A&M. The Rattlers were led by Carrie Hopkinson, who rolled a 192.

North Carolina A&T 903, Hampton 823
Emily Strombeck guided the Lady Aggies with a 242 as North Carolina A&T bested Hampton 903-823. Amy Chirico tallied a 186 to lead the Lady Pirates.

Norfolk State 880, Morgan State 727
The defending MEAC Champion Norfolk State Spartans earned a win over Morgan State to open up the qualifying round. All-MEAC first team selection Thea Aspiras led Norfolk State with a 213. The Lady Bears were paced by All-MEAC first team selection Atoya Leatherbury, who rolled a 186.

Maryland Eastern Shore 1028, Florida A&M 933

The Lady Hawks had three 200-plus games as they picked up a win over Florida A&M. Player of the Year Anggie Ramirez rolled a team-high 255 for Maryland Eastern Shore while Carrie Hopkinson topped the Lady Rattlers with a 220.

Delaware State 955, Norfolk State 867

Two Lady Hornets had 200-plus games as Delaware State defeated Norfolk State. Stephanie Sheridan bowled a 229 and Briana Bush bowled a 212 for the Lady Hornets while Carrie Hickey led the Spartans with a 204.

Hampton 916, Bethune-Cookman 829

Hampton recorded a win over Bethune-Cookman as Rebecca Glazier bowled a 223 to lead the Lady Pirates. Felicia Baker recorded a team-high 195 to lead the Lady Wildcats.

Morgan State 880, North Carolina A&T 858

Morgan State's Candace Walker bowled a 194 to guide the Lady Bears to a win over North Carolina A&T. Rookie of the Year Emily Strombeck paced the Lady Aggies with a 199.

Florida A&M 966, Morgan State 772

Katherine Jones led the Lady Rattlers with a 256 as Florida A&M defeated Morgan State. The Lady Bears were led by Kayla Meadows, who rolled a 188.

Norfolk State 854, Hampton 804

Carrie Hickey earned Norfolk State a win over Hampton after bowling a 211 to lead the Spartans. Hampton's Rebecca Glazier led the Lady Pirates with a 208.

Bethune-Cookman 886, Delaware State 858

Staci Hiliard guided Bethune-Cookman to a win over Delaware State with a 211 performance. The Lady Hornets were led by Stephanie Sheridan who bowled a 189.

Maryland Eastern Shore 1144, North Carolina A&T 847

Maryland Eastern Shore grabbed the win over North Carolina A&T as Megan Buja posted a 258 to lead the Lady Hawks, who had four scores over 200. The Lady Aggies were led by Emily Strombeck, who rolled a 223.

Delaware State 985, North Carolina A&T 854

Courtney Davis recorded a 243 to help Delaware State to a win over North Carolina A&T. The Lady Aggies were led by Amber Brown, who rolled a 192.

Bethune-Cookman 800, Morgan State 732

Felicia Baker led the Lady Wildcats to a win over Morgan State, tallying a 168. Kayla Meadows and All-MEAC first team selection Atoya Leatherbury each rolled a 171 to lead the Lady Bears.

Maryland Eastern Shore 975, Norfolk State 873

Mariana Alvarado had a team-high 218 as Maryland Eastern Shore posted a win over Norfolk State. All-MEAC first team selection Thea Aspiras led the Spartans with a 189.

Florida A&M 933, Hampton 906

Florida A&M posted a win over the Hampton as Katherine Jones posted a 219 to guide the Lady Rattlers. The Lady Pirates were led by Pamela Kettler, who rolled a 193.

Norfolk State 928, Bethune-Cookman 927

Shiela Marie Smith topped the Spartans with a 213, helping Norfolk State to a win over Bethune-Cookman. The Lady Wildcats were led by All-MEAC first team selection Staci Hilliard, who rolled a 241.

North Carolina A&T 955, Florida A&M 862

Najah Owens guided North Carolina A&T to a win over Florida A&M, leading her team with a 209. Carrie Hopkinson lead the Lady Rattlers with a 198.

Maryland Eastern Shore 902, Morgan State 871

MEAC Bowler of the Year Anggie Ramirez rolled a 202 to help Maryland Eastern Shore defeat Morgan State. The Lady Bears were led by Danielle Hale, who bowled a 222.

Delaware State 927, Hampton 743

With a 215, Courtney Davis's efforts led Delaware State to a victory over Hampton. Cierra Stancil had a 171 to lead the Lady Pirates.
