Lady Pirates Survive Battle With Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. -Hampton had a scare from Coppin State on Saturday evening at the Physical Education Complex, but the Lady Pirates held on for their ninth straight win, taking the game 68-59.

The Lady Pirates (18-5, 9-0 MEAC) are now 11-1 on the road.

Senior guard Olivia Allen led the Lady Pirates with a career-high 25 points, hitting a career-high seven 3-pointers. Senior forward Keiara Avant, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added 16 points and a team-high 14 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season.

The Lady Pirates shot 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the floor and hit seven of their 17 3-pointers (41.2 percent). Hampton was also 23-for-33 (69.7 percent) from the free throw line. Hampton also held a 28-19 edge in points off turnovers and a 19-8 edge in second-chance points.

Coppin State (9-14, 5-5 MEAC) shot just 26.7 percent (16-for-60) from the floor, but the Lady Eagles held a 49-44 edge on the glass.

Leola Spotwood led the Lady Eagles with 19 points.

Sweeney, Claybrooks Lead UMES To 72-53 Win Over NCCU

Shawnee Sweeney, Ashleigh Claybrooks each score 17 points

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - With help from Shawnee Sweeney and Ashleigh Claybrooks scoring 17 points each, UMES snapped its four-game losing streak with a 72-53 victory over North Carolina Central on Monday at the Hytche.  UMES improves to 2-5 in MEAC play and 6-12 overall, while NCCU falls to 0-8 in conference competition and 0-21 this season.

Sweeney added a career-high six steals with her personal-best 17 points, shooting 7-12 from the floor.  Claybrooks was 7-9 from the field for 17 points, adding four boards. Alexis Udoji was a strong defensive player, finishing with a career-high seven blocks, adding nine rebounds and two steals.  Long and Finney earned 11 and 10 points respectively, with the former adding six assists and the latter getting five steals.

Finishing with a double-double for NCCU was Chasidy Williams, concluding with 22 points and 11 rebounds.  Kaylah Blount almost had a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds.

Williams 22-Point Performance Not Enough For NCCU Against UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Three Lady Eagles earn season-high performances as North Carolina Central fell to the Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks, 72-53.

Redshirt senior Chasidy Williams led all-scorers, also earning a double-double, with a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Redshirt freshmen Kaylah Blount also had her best outing of the season leading the game on the boards seizing 14 total rebounds in addition to her season-high nine points. Fellow freshmen Aja Hoyle also posted a season-high on the offensive end scoring a total of 11 points while also pulling down four boards, dishing out four assist and collecting one steal.

The Lady Eagles 53 point performance marks the most points scored by the maroon and gray since Nov. 21, 2012, when NCCU fell to Western Carolina 67-55.

As a team the Lady Eagles shot 28-percent from the field, almost doubled their opponents on the boards pulling down a total of 50 rebounds compared to the Lady Hawks 29, dished out five assists, stole the ball five  times and scored 25 points off of free throws shooting 25-for-36 from the charity stripe at 69 percent.

UMES was led offensively by four different Lady Hawks who all scored in double digits on the night. Ashleigh Claysbrooks and Shawnee Sweeney scored 17 points apiece while Jessica Long and Sha-Kiyla Finney contributed 11 and 10 respectively.

Overall, the Lady Hawks shot 44 percent from the field, 5-for-18 from behind the arch, 83 percent from the free throw line, assisted 20 UMES shots, blocked 11 Lady Eagle shots and amassed 17 steals.
