Morgan State Falls To Longwood, 4-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Morgan State men's tennis team (0-9) fell 4-1 to Big South opponent Longwood Sunday in non-conference action.

 The Lancers headed into singles action after sweeping the Bears for the doubles point.  The Morgan State No. 1 duo of Ondre Cargill and Dimitry Borodkin lost on the court 8-5 to Giorgi Khmiadashvili and Daniel Elston of Longwood.

 Duk Young-Park and Evan Ward did not finish and trailed 7-6 at the No. 2 position to Harry Kelleher and Edward Becker, while Longwood's No. 3 pairing of James Fudge and Steed Johnson held on to beat Jannick Tash and Eric Ward 9-8 (7-4).

 Morgan State's Ondre Cargill recorded the only win of the day by the Bears when he handed Edward Becker a 6-4, 6-2 defeat at the No. 4 position.

Spartans Upend N.C. Central, 4-0

 DURHAM, N.C. -The Norfolk State men's tennis team claimed a 4-0 win over fellow MEAC opponent North Carolina Central on Saturday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.

NSU improved to 2-0 in the MEAC and 4-5 overall while N.C. Central fell to 0-1 in the league and 0-2 on the season.

In the doubles matches, junior Peter Ramstromer-Pello and freshman Dzmitry Zyhmantovich led off with an 8-3 win over Jose Fabara and Daniil Gerasimov. At the No. 2 spot, freshman Robin Riethmueller and sophomore Igor Braga posted an 8-2 victory over Thomas Persico and Fabrice George.

Zyhmantovich competed in the No. 1 singles position where he defeated Persico, 6-0, 5-0, by default due to Persico's behavior. In the No. 4 slot, Ramstromer-Pello upended George, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Samuel Lemberger defeated Jamal Hoyte, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 6 singles spot.

NCCU Women's Tennis Defeats Norfolk State 6-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University seized its second win of the 2013 campaign with a 6-1 victory over the Norfolk State University Spartans on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The home event opened when partners senior Aissa Muamba and Olesya Palko, Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood and Mia Ramic and Brianna Gatson went undefeated in doubles play.

Muamba and Palko defeated Yvonne Kamegne and Laura Gutierrez at the No.1 spot (8-2). In the No. 2 slot, Nekrasova and Wood downed Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda (7-4, retired) and Ramic and Gatson beat Kia Batiste and Maryna Kariuk (8-1) at the No. 3 spot.

The maroon and gray snatched the singles win by seizing five-of-the-six victories.

Palko defeated Macchiavello 6-3, 6-2, as Nekrasova beat her NSU opponent, Kamegne, 6-0, 6-3.Muamba overpowered Gutierrez 6-0, 6-2, while Wood and Ramic closed out head-to-head competition with wins over Lhorca Mafalda and Kariuk  6-4, 6-7 (6-10), 6-1 and 6-1, 7-5 respectively.

The Spartans picked up their only victory on the afternoon in the No. 6 spot when Rebecca Graff defeated Gatson 6-0, 6-1.

The Lady Eagles advance to 2-2 on the season while NSU fall to 3-3.
