Hampton Opens Phoenix Clash With Pair Of Wins

ELON, N.C. -Hampton got off to a hot start in the Elon Phoenix Clash on Saturday at Hunt Softball Park, picking up wins over Saint Peter's and Temple.

The Lady Pirates (3-8) opened with a 10-0, five-inning win over Saint Peter's on Saturday, before beating Temple 5-1.

Hampton jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one inning in the first game, starting with an RBI double from sophomore Bianca Vallejo. Senior Adrianna Scott followed that by reaching on an error, which brought in another run, before senior Carla Trimble singled home the third run of the inning.

After sophomore Kerissa Burruel scored, junior Margaret Wilkins singled home a pair of runs to put the Lady Pirates up 6-0.

The scoring continued in the bottom of the second inning, as a run scored when senior Shine Huwe reached on an error. Freshman Taylor McCoy then singled up the middle to bring home two more runs.

Wilkins then singled to right-center field to bring home another run and giving Hampton a 10-0 lead.

Freshman Bobbi Langlois, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, picked up her first collegiate win on the mound after throwing three innings of one-hit ball, striking out two Peacocks. Freshman Jecholia Pratt pitched the other two innings.

Wilkins went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in a team-high three runs.

Temple took a 1-0 lead after one inning in Hampton's second game, but the Lady Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning after Huwe reached on a fielder's choice and Vallejo crossed the plate.

McCoy singled home a run in the fifth inning to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead, before Hampton pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Scott hit a home run to right-center field, her second of the season, before McCoy hit her first career home run over the left-field wall to give Hampton a 4-1 lead. Senior Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) singled home the final run of the game to score Vallejo.

Sophomore Jailynn threw a complete game in picking up her second win of the season, tying her career high with nine strikeouts and giving up just four hits.

Softball Falls To Butler, 8-3 In TSU Tiger Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 23, 2013)-Morgan State dropped an 8-3 decision to Butler in a non-conference game on Saturday morning on the opening day of the Tennessee State Tiger Invitational. Morgan State fell to 0-7 on the season with the loss, while Butler picked up its first win of the season and improved to 1-6.

The Bulldogs struck first with two runs in the bottom of first inning when Maria Leichty's two run triple to right field drove in Alex Kotter and Meaghan Sullivan for a 2-0 lead.

Morgan State quickly got back in the game by scoring two runs in the top of the second to even the score at 2-2. Danielle Lugo led the comeback with a lead-off walk. Three batters later Kimberly Fontaine walked, Nicole Holguin advanced to third on a wild pitch and Lugo scored. Two batters later a wild pitch would allow Holguin to tie the game.

The Bulldogs would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single through the left side from Riley Carter to score Audrey East for the 3-2 advantage.

Butler extended its cushion to 6-2 with three more runs in the fourth. Sullivan singled to left center to drive in two runs and Leichty drove in a run with a single through the left side for the sixth run.

The Lady Bears would score their third and final run of the game in the sixth when Taylor McDougall singled through the left side to score Tiffany Rubin to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Butler rounded out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Carrie Tveita singled to right center, scoring Krista Hakola and Sarah Gronowski for the 8-3 victory.

Jenny Esparza earned the win for Butler to improve to 1-1 on the season. Esparza surrendered two runs on no hits, had four walks and recorded three strikeouts in four innings of work.

Holguin (0-3) was charged with the loss for Morgan State. Holguin gave up six runs on 11 hits and had a strikeout in 3.1 innings.

Bethune-Cookman Splits Games at Hatter Classic on Saturday

DELAND, Fla. - Michelle Baneulos-Smith had six hits on the day as Bethune-Cookman split its games at the Hatter Classic Saturday.

The Wildcats (2-11) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over Dartmouth in eight innings before falling 7-3 to host Stetson.

B-CU 9, DARTMOUTH 6 (8)

Banuelos-Smith went 4-5 and drove in three runs as the Wildcats rallied to down Dartmouth in extra innings.

The Wildcats forced extra innings in the seventh when Banuelos-Smith singled home Simone Ceasar to tie the game at 6-6.

In the eighth, Wanda Darby scored when Calesha Shelley reached on an error. Shelley stole second and third and was brought in by a Kelsey Rodney single, then Rodney scored on a Melissa Berouty single.

B-CU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Banuelos-Smith launched a two-out triple to score Shelley and Ceasar, but Dartmouth took the lead with a three-run fifth.

In the sixth, Shamaria Engram singled in Berouty and Shelley's two-run single scored Darby and Engram for a 5-3 Wildcat lead, but Dartmouth took a 6-5 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Shelley, Ceasar and Berouty each had two hits for B-CU.

STETSON 7, B-CU 3

Against Stetson, the Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth when Rodney scored on a Berouty single, but the Hatters pulled away in the seventh, stringing together six straight two-out hits to produce four runs.

Banuelos-Smith scored the first two B-CU runs after leading off the second with a double and scoring on an error and scoring on a fourth-inning error after singling.

Lady Rattler drop a pair in the Hatter Classic to Dartmouth and Stetson

DELAND, Fla. (Feb. 23) - Florida A&M dropped a pair of games today as they fell to Dartmouth, 6-2 in game one and was blanked 11-0 by Stetson University, the Hatter Classic, Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

Against DU, FAMU tallied five hits in the contest as Ashanti Shepherd finished with a game high two hits.

DU finished the contest with six hits as six batters for the Big Green finished with one hit each.

Kristen Rumley (2-0) picked up the win for DU as she pitched seven innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out four in the 27 batters she faced, while Jennifer Lindsey (1-7) received the loss for FAMU as she gave up four hits and three earned runs in four innings in the circle for the Lady Rattlers.

The Big Green plated three runs in the top of the first as on a Hillary Hubert bases clearing double, scoring Morgan McCalmon, Kriste Rumley and Kara Curosh.

FAMU picked a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut DU's lead to 3-1 as Shepherd scored on a Raven Moseley sacrifice fly to right field.

DU scored three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run homer by Katie McEachern and Lohmann scoring on an FAMU infielder's error, giving the Big Green a 6-1 lead.

The Lady Rattlers picked on more run in the bottom of the seventh Kieifi Myrick, who tripled to lead off the inning, scored on an Alyssa Weaver ground out to second base for the 6-2 final.

Against Stetson, the Lady Rattlers tallied two hits, while SU punched out 13 in the contest.

Both Robbielyn Robberson and Weaver finished with one hit each for the Lady Rattlers, while the Hatters had five batters to finish with two hits each for SU.

Meredith Owens (5-1) got the win for SU as she gave up two hits, and striking out three in five innings of work, while Ashleigh Minter (1-3) received the loss for FAMU as she gave up six hits, seven earned runs in the seven batters she faced.

SU scored took the early lead as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first, one run in the second and three runs in the fourth for the 11-0 finale.

FAMU broke up the no-hitter in the top of the second inning as both Robberson singled to the left side and Weaver with a hit up the middle.
