Lady Rattlers Fall to Mercer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb.21) -The Lady Rattlers were unable to pull off a home court win, falling 6-1 to the Bears of Mercer.

Bethany Holt, senior and captain of the team, was the first to drop her singles match at (6-3,6-3).


Three matches went into three sets and the team was able to pull off one win at four singles. Elysia Ortiz won (1-6, 6-3,6-2) and her first serves held steady.

Florida A&M Top Mercer,6-1

The Rattler men's tennis team played a tough battle against the Mercer Bears, Thursday. While supporting prostate cancer awareness by wearing blue, the Rattlers defeated the Bears at the Rattler Tennis Courts. FAMU (3-7) overpowered Mercer with a 6-1 win.

The Rattlers began their triumph by taking the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles team of Salif Kante and Takura Happy were to first off the courts defeating Arsav Mohanty and Arnav Mohanty 8-2.

The No. 3 doubles team of Chidi Gabriel and Admire Mushonga secured the doubles point with their 8-4 win against Joao Pagan and Peter Tauchner. No. 2 doubles partners Zach Evenden and Temuera Asafu-Adjaye fell short losing 8-4 to Anderson Scarpa and Austin Emmet.

Gabriel, playing at the No. 2 slot, led the team to the win, defeating Scarpa (6-1, 6-2). He was followed by Mushonga at the No. 4 position with a win of (6-3, 6-2) against Tauchner. Happy secured the win for the Rattlers at the No. 5 slot, after defeating Pagan (7-5, 6-1).

With the match already decided, Evenden won a rough battle against Monhanty (6-2, 6-1, 6-0), at the No. 3 slot. The 2012 MEAC Player of the Year, Kante, triumphed over Mohanty after a long battle (7-6, 6-3) and finished the match after a (10-6) tiebreaker. Asafu-Adjaye was defeated by Mercer's Vincent DeLise (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 6 slot.
