NSU's Armstead, Brooks Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

Norfolk State senior student-athletes Charlotte Armstead and Marian Brooks were recently awarded postgraduate scholarships from the NCAA to further their education in the 2013-14 academic year.

Armstead, who recently completed a stellar four-year career for the NSU volleyball team, received the NCAA Ethnic Minority Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. The scholarship will pay $6,000 towards Armstead's tuition next year. A kinesiology major, Armstead is a multi-year member of the NSU Athletics Director's Honor Roll and All-MEAC Academic Team who plans to pursue a graduate degree in sports administration. She was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society last year. Armstead was also a second-team All-MEAC performer this past fall for the Spartans and leaves NSU as the school's all-time leader in kills, total blocks, block assists, total attacks and sets played.

Brooks, who is in her fourth year on the NSU women's basketball team, received the NCAA Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. That scholarship will also pay $6,000 toward her tuition next year. A journalism major, Brooks has been named to the NSU Athletics Director's Honor Roll and All-MEAC Academic Team during her career at NSU. She is also a member of the NSU Honors College and like Armstead was an inductee into NSU's inaugural class of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society last year. Brooks plans to pursue a career in either sports media or coaching. Though currently injured, Brooks has played in 90 career games and started 54 times over her four years, averaging 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Brooks was also recently accepted into the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "So You Want to Be a Coach" program. The event takes place April 5-7 in New Orleans, La., in conjunction with the WBCA's national convention and the Women's Final Four. Prospective program members had to be nominated by their head coach and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
