Doyle Leads Howard Past Bethune-Cookman

The Howard University Lady Bison 61-27 victory over the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman was full record-breaking action on Monday evening at the Moore Gymnasium.

At the 11:23 mark of the MEAC, senior Saadia Doyle became the all-time leading scorer at Howard. She also became the all-time leading scorer in the MEAC. 

Doyle surprassed Alisha Hill former Howard and MEAC scoring leader. Hill totaled 2,179 points in her career (1994-98).  Doyle concluded the game with 22 points and now sits with 2,197 for her career.

In the first-half of competition, Bethune-Cookman only scored one field goal, with the remaining four points coming from the free-throw line, holding B-CU to a 25-point 31-6 deficit at the half.

In spite of a change to the Lady Wildcats second-half starters, Howard to stay offensively and defensively strong, reaching a 31-point margin lead by the 10:20 mark of the second half for a score of 48-17.

Doyle led Howard in points (22), while Kara Smith followed with 15 points. Both Doyle and Smith shared the rebounding effort, with senior pair pulling down seven boards apiece. Cheyenne Curley-Payne led the squad with seven assists, as Imani Bailey guided the Lady Bison in steals with three.

Howard shot 41 percent from the field (22-54), 31 percent from the 3-point range and 75-percent from the charity stripe.

Jasmine Evans led the Lady Wildcats with eight points, followed by Terrenisha Hollis with six. Shakeyia Coyler grabbed 11 rebounds.

Coppin State Holds Off UMES, 55-50

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Senior Leola Spotwood scored 18 points, including the go-ahead basket with 2:30 to play, and Coppin State held Maryland Eastern Shore scoreless for the final 4:23 of the game as the Eagles defeated the Hawks 55-50 on Monday in a MEAC game in the WP Hytche Center.

Karona Roach put Maryland Eastern Shore ahead 50-47 with a pair of free throws with 4:24 to play in the game before the Eagles rallied.

Spotwood hit one of two free throws and then connected on a jumper to tie the game at 50-50 with 2:57 left in regulation.

Spotwood then put the Eagles ahead to stay at 52-50 when she scored a basket with 2:30 left in the game.

Larrisa Carter scored inside with 19 seconds left to push the lead to 54-50 and Spotwood added a free throw with 11 seconds remaining to help seal the victory.

Meanwhile, the Coppin State defense limited UMES to 0-for-3 shooting over the final 4:23 of the game and forced the Hawks into five turnovers.

Coppin State improved to 11-15 overall and 7-6 in the MEAC, while Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in conference play.

The Eagles forced the Hawks into 25 turnovers and scored 23 points off of those turnovers.

Spotwood finished the game 7-of-17 from the floor to lead the Eagles, while Carter added 12 points. Bria Harris added seven points for Coppin State.

Alexis Udoji led UMES with nine points, while Chalyse Taylor and Ashleigh Claybrooks each had eight points.
