NCCU Clutches 43-38 Victory Over Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - North Carolina Central's duo of Chasidy Williams and Aja Hoyle combined for a total of 27 points, leading the Lady Eagles squad to a 43-38 win over the Lady Tigers from Savannah State University on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga.

NCCU's Williams and Hoyle led the game contributing 14 and 13 points respectively. Williams also added six rebounds during the victory while shooting 5-for-18 from the field, a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, dishing out three assists and stealing one Lady Tiger possession while Hoyle grabbed an additional five steals for NCCU.

Fellow freshman Tisha Dixon led all rebounders during the contest seizing a game-high of 12 rebounds. The Kinston, N.C., native also scored six points and dished out one assist while shooting 2-for-3 from the free throw line.

The MEAC victory marked the first win under head coach Vanessa Taylor while also snapping a 29 game losing streak from the Lady Eagles which dates back to Feb. 11, 2012 when NCCU defeated SSU at home and marks Taylors 299 victory all-time.

In the first victory of the 2012-13 season, the Lady Eagles shot 30 percent from the field, grabbed 36 boards, captured 11 steals, and shot 13-for-19 from the charity stripe.

Andrietta Thomas guided the Lady Tigers' offense with11 points while Erin Hogue added 12 rebounds.

In the loss, SSU was 32 percent from the field, 3-of-10 from behind the arc and 1-for-2 from the free throw line.

Lady Rattlers Fall To Lady Bison 58-57

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb.16) - Florida A&M lost another close game as the Howard University Lady Bison defeated them, 58-57, Saturday evening at the Alfred Lawson Center in MEAC action.

FAMU (9-15, 6-5 MEAC) had two Lady Rattlers to score in double figures as Jasmine Grice carried the team with 23 points and eight rebounds. Kimberly Sparkman followed with 18 points.

Howard (15-9, 9-3 MEAC) had two Lady Bison to score in double figures as Saadia Doyle led the team with 23 points and six rebounds. Kara Smith had 13 points.

The Lady Rattlers shot 38-percent (21-of-56) from the field and 79-percent (11-of-14) from the free throw line. FAMU lost the battle in the paint as the Lady Bison outscored them 24-12 and won in the second chance point's column 13-4.

UMES Frontcourt Play Leads To Comeback Win Over Morgan State


PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -
Down 11 at the 13:32 mark in the second half, the Lady Hawks played strong defense and powered their way through a 24-9 run for a 54-50 comeback victory over Morgan State on Homecoming.  UMES goes to 3-7 in the MEAC and 7-14 overall, while Morgan State falls to 8-17 this season and 5-7 in conference play.

UMES outrebounded the Lady Bears 46-35 in the game and outscored its opponent 24-16 in the paint.

Ashleigh Claybrooks went 7-8 from the field on Saturday, leading the team with 14 points and eight rebounds, each team-highs, off the bench for UMES.  Roach scored nine points with five boards and three assists, while Kelly concluded with eight points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

For MSU, Chyress Lockhart ended with a squad-best 16 points and nine rebounds.  Jarrett concluded the game with seven points, four steals and three rebounds before fouling out.

SC State Defeat N.C. A&T 68-57 in MEAC Action

ORANGEBURG, SC - Sophomore Kourtney Williams came off the bench to lead four South Carolina State players in double figures with 15 points as the Lady Bulldogs downed visiting North Carolina A&T 68-57 Saturday in a MEAC contest.

Ashley Clarke, one of five seniors honored on "Senior Night," added 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs, who also got 11 and 10 points, respectively, from Trinese Fox and Tiara Knotts, also seniors recognized during a special ceremony between games.

Other seniors honored in the ceremony were Fannie Goodwin, who finished with four points and two rebounds and Cabriel Duren, who chipped in seven points in the win.

Coach Doug Robertson's team improved to 14-7 on the year and 6-4 in the MEAC. With a win over North Carolina Central Monday, Robertson's would be assured of his first winning campaign in five seasons as Lady Bulldog head coach. It would also be the first winning season for the SC State women since the 2001-02 school year when the Lady Bulldogs were 18-11 under Keshia Campbell.

Eboni Ross had 15 points and six boards to lead NC A&T. JaQuayla Berry added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Aggies, who came into the contest in second place in the MEAC standings behind only Hampton, who was undefeated in league games starting the night. The visitors fell to 16-8 overall and 8-3 in the MEAC and in a tie for second in the standings with Howard.

Lady Hornets Stumble Late In Loss To Lady Eagles


Dover, Del. (Feb. 16, 2013) --- Delaware State led by as many as 11 points in the first half before Coppin State rallied for a 73-68 win in Memorial Hall this afternoon.

The Lady Hornets dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 8-15 overall and 5-5 in the MEAC. Coppin State improved to 10-15 and 6-6.

Tierra Hawkins was high scorer for DSU with 19 points, while Tasia Bristow added 17.

Kyra Coleman led Coppin State with 12 points.

Delaware State outrebounded the Eagles 38-33 but was plagued by 25 turnovers.

Hawkins has reached double figures in scoring in 20 of Delaware State's 23 games. She has led the team in scoring in 16 games.
