Lady Pirates Run Past Delaware State For 10th Straight Win

HAMPTON, Va. -Hampton University ran past Delaware State Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center, as the Lady Pirates took the contest 75-56 for their 10th straight win.

With a win next Monday, Feb. 18, over Norfolk State, the Lady Pirates (19-5, 10-0 MEAC) will record their fourth straight 20-win season.

Junior forward Alyssa Bennett led the Lady Pirates with 21 points, thanks in large part to her career-high four 3-pointers. Senior forward Keiara Avant, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, added 20 points on 6-for-13 shooting.


The Lady Pirates shot 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the floor, hitting eight of their 15 3-pointers (53.3 percent) and going 15-for-23 (65.2 percent) from the free throw line. Hampton turned over Delaware State 22 times, resulting in 30 points.

The Lady Hornets (8-14, 5-4 MEAC) shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53) from the floor - thanks mostly to a 59.3 percent clip (16-for-27) in the second half. Delaware State also held a 33-30 edge on the glass.

Tierra Hawkins led the Lady Hornets with 18 points.

North Carolina Defeats Florida A&M, 69-50

GREENSBORO-North Carolina A&T picked up their 16th win on the year, and their sixth straight victory, with a 69-50 victory against Florida A&M in Corbett Sports Center on Monday evening.

The Aggies (16-7, 8-2) haven't won 16 games since the 2009-10 season, when they captured the MEAC regular season title and won a pair of games in the WNIT to end the year with a 23-11 record. The six wins matches a season-long winning streak from 2011-12.

JaQuayla Berry and Eboni Ross each had eight first-half points. i Ross ended the game with a team-best 15 points, while Berry had 14 for the Aggies. Tracy King also contributed 10 points for North Carolina A&T.

UMES Nearly Comes Back From Down 20, Falls Just Short To NSU, 54-51

NORFOLK, Va. - The Lady Hawks nearly pulled off a huge comeback, getting to within two after being down 20, but UMES was one possession short, falling to Norfolk State 54-51 on Monday.  UMES falls to 6-14 overall and 2-7 in conference play, while the Spartans go to 5-17 this season and 3-8 in the MEAC.

Karona Roach earned her first double digit game in four games, finishing with 19 points, including 15 in the second half.  Finney concluded with 10 points and three steals, while Ashleigh Claybrooks grabbed 10 rebounds and scored three points.

For NSU, Rachel Gordon got a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Ebony Brown concluded with 10 points and four boards.

NCCU FALLS TO BETHUNE-COOKMAN, 51-34

DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - During the North Carolina Central's second match-up with the Lady Wildcats from Bethune-Cookman, the Lady Eagles fell by 15 to BCU 51-34 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on the campus of NCCU.

NCCU rookie Tisha Dixon led the game with 12 rebounds while also contributing eight points in the contest. Red shirt senior Chasidy Williams and freshman Aja Hoyle also added eight points apiece in the defeat.

As a team NCCU shot 28-percent from the field, pulled down a game-high of 33 boards, dished out eight assists, collected five steals, blocked four B-CU shots and shot 80 percent from the charity stripe.

The Lady Wildcats were led offensively by the duo of Terrenisha Hollis and Shakeyia Colyer who contributed 18 and 16 points respectively.

B-CU as a team shot 36 percent from the field, collected 32 rebounds, dished out 11 assists, stole 12 NCCU possessions, shot 32 percent from behind the arch and 5-for-9 from the free throw line.
