Bethune-Cookman Falls to North Florida and Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman concluded play at the Panhandle Invitational with losses to North Florida and Florida State Sunday.

The Wildcats (0-4) fell 5-3 to the Ospreys and 20-0 to the nationally ranked Seminoles.

Against North Florida, B-CU took a 1-0 in the second when Kelsey Rodney reached first, advanced to third on Shamaria Engram's single and scored on an illegal pitch.

North Florida tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, then scored four in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh, Rodney scored on a throwing error and Melissa Berouty scored on an Aurelia Gamch single as B-CU closed to 5-3.

Florida State scored 15 runs in the first inning en route to a run-rule decision over the Wildcats in the second game.

Simone Ceasar had two hits in each game, and finished the four-game Invitational with a .500 average (6-12) while Gamch batted .417(5-12) and Michelle Banuelos-Smith had two RBI.

NCCU Wraps Up Subway Classic With 14-0 Loss To USC-Upsate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -North Carolina Central wrapped up its season-opening four game stretch after facing the USC-Upstate Subway Classic host Spartans where they fell 14-0 to the hot hitters in Spartanburg, S.C., at Cyrill Stadium.

Sophomore Tiphani Jackson was the lone Lady Eagle named to the Subway Upstate Classic All-Tournament Team after starting off the 2013 season with a .500 batting average, .500 slugging and on base percentage, went 4-for-8 from the plate with four hits and four total bases.

In addition to Jackson, freshman Jenny Tracy and senior Shakemia Edwards each earned a hit a piece for the Lady Eagles during the contest.

Freshman London Booker (0-2) took home the loss during the game, starting on the mound for NCCU and pitching 2.1 innings before retiring from the circle. Book gave up 14 hits, 13 runs, and eight earned runs during her time on the rubber. Senior Bianka Molina entered the game midway through the bottom of the third. Molina threw 1.2 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out one Spartan batter.

Six total Spartans earned two hits during the game while USC-Upstate was led offensively by third baseman Kaitlyn Jaeger who contributed two hits, two runs, four RBIs and two homeruns.

UMES Off To Best Start In Over A Decade With Doubleheader Split On Sunday

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Maryland Eastern Shore softball is off to its best start in over a decade as the Lady Hawks earned a doubleheader split against Saint Peter's College on Sunday afternoon to move to 3-1 on the season. The Lady Hawks walked off with a 10-9 victory in eight innings in game one, before they dropped the night cap by a score of 12-7.

It was the effort of freshmen Vanessa Gomez and Trenece Nash that were the difference, as the pair combined to register 11 hits, 10 RBI and four stolen bases in the two games. Gomez registered five knocks altogether, including the game-winning single in UMES' 10-9 extra-inning victory in game one. Nash was 6-for-11 across the doubleheader with three doubles and eight RBI.

SPC was led by Francesca D'Amato, who was 3-for-9 on the day with five RBIs and one homer. Chelsea Crews had four hits in game two with two RBI and Beaver combined to total four hits and four runs. Beaver picked up the loss on the hill in the first game when she gave up two earned runs in four and two-third innings. Erica Colon was the winner in game two with a complete game, three strikeout effort.

SC State Softball Defeats Howard in 2013 Home Opener

 

Orangeburg, S.C.-SC State had 10 hits as they defeated Howard, 6-4, in their 2013 season home-opener.  With the win the Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall.

Howard put up one run in the top of the first inning to take the advantage to start the game.  After going scoreless in the bottom of the first, Kourtney Paulo hit a two run double to give the Lady Bulldogs the 2-1 lead.  The Lady Bulldogs put up two additional runs in the bottom of the second to take the 4-2 advantage. SC State put up one run in the third and one in the sixth to push its lead to 6-1 heading into the seventh.  Howard bats came to life in the top of the seventh.  The Lady Bison put up three runs to cut the deficit to two, 6-4, but could not get any closer.

Taylor-Anne Harris and sophomore Mikala Johnson led the team offensively with two hits each.  The Lady Bulldogs received runs from Cianna Burt, LaTavia Riley, Shannon Baity, Vianney Gomez, Kourtney Paulo and Harris en route to the victory.

M organ State Drops Two More Games During Lady Tiger Softball Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. (Feb. 10, 2013)-The weekend did not conclude on the high note that the Morgan State softball team had hoped for, as the Lady Bears dropped back-to-back losses to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) teams on Sunday in the Lady Tiger Softball Tournament hosted by Savannah State.

With today's losses coupled with yesterday's doubleheader loss to host and MEAC South Division foe Savannah State, the Lady Bears went winless for the weekend and fell to 0-4 on the season.

Morgan State first dropped a 6-0 decision in the morning to Sun Conference member Thomas University, before dropping a 10-2 decision to another Sun Conference member in South Carolina Beaufort in the afternoon. Both games were played at Lady Tiger Field on the Savannah State campus.

Morgan State was led by Shareday Christina, who went 2-for-3 on the day for the Lady Bears, who tallied six hits in the game.
