Women's Tennis Recap: Feb. 9

Lady Bulldogs Defeat NSU, 7-0


NORFOLK, Va. -Norfolk State suffered a 7-0 loss to South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Indoor Tennis Center.

NSU dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 3-2 overall while S.C. State improved to 0-1 in the MEAC and 1-1 on the season.

At the No. 1 doubles slot, S.C. State's Maria Craciun and Nataliya Dyatlova defeated freshman Andrea Macchiavello and sophomore Yvonne Kamegne, 8-0. In the No. 2 position, sophomores Laura Gutierrez and Mafalda Lhorca suffered an 8-2 loss to Kateryna Nakonechna and Katarina Barborikova. Sophomore Kia Batiste and senior Rebecca Graff were down 3-6 to Victoria Khatcei and Laura Bosneag before the match was abandoned.

Macchiavello competed at the No. 1 singles spot where she fell to Craciun, 5-7, 2-6. In the No. 2 position, Nakonechna defeated Kamegne, 6-1, 6-3. Barborikova claimed a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Gutierrez at the No. 3 slot. In the No. 4 position, Lhorca fell to a Dohnalova, 1-6, 1-6. Khatcei posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Batiste in the No. 5 spot. Graff closed out the singles matches with a 1-6, 1-6 loss to Bosneag.

Savannah State Drops Road Match To Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - The Savannah State women's team made a trip up the eastern seaboard to Conway, South Carolina Saturday for a match up with Coastal Carolina. The Lady Tigers fell to Coastal, 0-7.

In singles action at the first court, SSU junior Sandra Kristjansdottir fell to Libby Scott in straight sets, 0-6 and 1-6. In the number two spot, Andrea Pavlovic fell to Shelby Bates, 2-6, and 2-6.

SSU's Esmira Gheisary fell to Alicia Robinson 0-6 and 1-6 in the third court, while Lady Tiger Nicole Ashiedu retired in the first set, conceding to Kortney Kowal.

In the fifth court, Davita Washington fell to Mikaela Davies 1-6 and 1-6. Rounding out the singles play, SSU freshman Tiffany Williams fell to Dominique DeWit in straight sets, 0-6 and 0-6.

In doubles action, the team of Kristjansdottir and Ashiedu dropped the first court, 0-8, to the Coastal Carolina team of Kowal and Davies.

Gheisary and Pavlovic fell in the second court to Shelby and Robinson, 3-8. Washington and Williams fell, 0-8, in the third court to DeWit and Scott.

North Carolina A&T Swept by East Carolina, 7-0

GREENSBORO-North Carolina A&T was swept by East Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

The Aggies (0-4) had a pair of competitive doubles matches as senior April Burrage and freshman Jayla Scott fell by 8-3 to Danielle Terpko and Dana Gary at the No. 2 doubles match. Junior Victorea Austin and freshman Takeyrah Reid lost the No. 3 doubles match by 8-2.

In singles action, the Pirates (3-1) dominated. Junior Kimberly Stalling and Scott were the only two Aggies to record a point in a set. The rest of the Aggies were defeated by 6-0, 6-0 in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches.
