Morgan State Uses Strong Second Half to Overtake Coppin State
BALTIMORE -- Kyra Coleman's game-high 22 points was not enough for Coppin State to beat its cross-town rival Morgan State as the Eagles fell, 74-61, to the Bears on Saturday at the Physical Education Complex.
Coppin State's (9-15, 5-6 MEAC) lack of offensive efficiency throughout the game and Morgan State's big run midway through the second half contributed to the Eagles loss. Coppin State shot 28.1 percent from the field and 25 percent from the 3-point line for the game.
Morgan State used a 24-6 run in the second half to take control of the game.
The Bears trailed 49-44 after a layup by Larrisa Carter, but Whitney Southerland drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give Morgan State a 50-49 lead.
After a Coppin State timeout, the Eagles got a free throw by Coleman and a jumper from Leola Spotwood to regain the lead at 52-50 with 9:25 remaining in the game.
Tracey Carrington scored a layup and was fouled and the ensuing free throw put the Bears ahead to stay at 53-52 with 9:05 to play.
Another three-pointer by Southerland pushed the lead to 65-55 with 5:24 to play in the second half.
The Bears capped the run with two free throws by Bianca Jarrett and a basket by Alauna Jackson to extend the margin to 68-55 at the 4:47 mark of the second half.
Coleman finished the game 6-of-13 from the field and 10-of-16 from the free-throw line and also added eight rebounds to lead the Eagles, while junior Larrisa Carter scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Bianca Jarrett led Morgan State with 18 points, scoring 11 of her points from the free-throw line. Carrington pitched in with 12 points and Southerland was 4-of-6 from the three-point line to finish with 12 points off the bench.
