PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Four years ago the Morgan State Lady Bears and the Brown Bears met in the consolation game of the 2009 Brown Classic with the host Bears taking a 65-62 overtime victory.
Four years later the two teams would meet for the second-time in school history and once again in the consolation game of the Brown Bear Classic.
Overtime would not be necessary this time, as Brown would build as much as a 28-point lead in the second half and held off a late rally by Morgan State to earn a 63-53 victory on Sunday afternoon at Pizzitola Sports Center to take third-place.
Lauren Clarke scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range to lead the host Bears, while Sophie Bikofsky added 17 points. Clarke’s performance came on a record setting day, where she reached the 1,000-point club at Brown.
Clarke, who scored 13 points in the second half, knocked down three straight three-pointers in the midst of a 13-3 run by the Bears. Clarke’s first three-pointer during the run came from the left elbow, giving her 1,001 career points. After a Brown timeout to celebrate the occasion and photo session with the entire team, Clarke proceeded to knock down two more three-pointers and a jumper by KJ Veldman with 10:42 to play, gave Brown its largest lead of the game at 28 points (54-26).
Morgan State (1-6) clawed back into the game, by scoring the next nine points of the game in part of a 23-4 run over nine minutes to pull within nine points (58-49) after two free throws by Dinah Jones with 1:31 to play.
However, a three-pointer from Sophie Beutel with 43 seconds left ended the run and any chance of a comeback.
Brown (5-4), which never trailed in the game, held a 12-9 lead, before using a 20-10 spurt over the final 10:16 of the first half to take a 32-19 lead at the break.
The Bears hit 11 three-pointers, while Morgan State knocked down four. The Lady Bears shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line, while Brown was 10-of-11.
Morgan State was led by Tracey Carrington, who scored a team-high 17 points, while Danielle Forrest finished with 12 points, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. Jones finished with a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Bears. Morgan State also got seven rebounds from Simone Sampson to help the Lady Bears to a 49-43 rebounding advantage over Brown.
Carrington would earn all-tournament team honors.
The Lady Bears will look to end its four-game losing skid, when it travels to the Nation’s Capital this Saturday, Dec. 14. when it takes on George Washington. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C.
