NSU Takes Down B-CU 74-61 to Win First MEAC Game of the Season

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior forward Ebony Brown tallied a season-high 20 points to lead Norfolk State past Bethune-Cookman 74-61 at Joseph Echols Hall on Saturday afternoon.

NSU shot 50 percent (25-of-50) on the afternoon. The Spartans had three players in double-figures, including Brown, who led all scorers with 20 points. Rae Corbo posted 19 points and. Quineshia Leonard finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Other notable scorers for NSU include Logan Powell, who scored a career-high nine points, and Rachel Gordon, who tallied eight points and nine rebounds.

Chastity Rene Taylor led the Lady Wildcats for the seventh time this season, logging 15 points. Kayla Crawford shot 57 percent from the field and 83 percent from the line to score a season-high 13 points, in addition to a team-best eight rebounds. Shakeyia Colyer also reached double figures with 10 points on the night.

The Lady Wildcats shot only 32.8 percent (19-of-58) overall and were 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line.

The Spartans will have the week off before returning to the court to host East Carolina on Dec. 17. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.

Lady Hornets Drop MEAC Opener at Home to Eagles, 80-75

DOVER, Del. –
The Delaware State women’s basketball team (3-4, 0-1 MEAC) were denied its third consecutive victory Saturday afternoon at home after MEAC foe Coppin State (4-4, 1-0 MEAC) came away with a 80-75 victory, in what the first conference test for both squads.

Kyra Coleman finished with a game-high 27 points (8-of-14) with 11 coming from the free line (11-of-16) to lead Coppin State.  Coleman also pulled down 11 boards, while Larissa Carter tallied 20 points (6-of-13) and a game-high 15 rebounds. Carter also shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free line.

Delaware State’s highest point getter was guard Raven Bankston with 21 points on a tough 7-for-21 (.333) performance from the field. Deanna Harmon finished the afternoon tying a season-high 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting (.750).

The Lady Hornets will be back in action next Saturday, December 14 at 7 p.m. on the road against No. 8 Maryland.

North Carolina A&T picks up non-conference win over Virginia-Lynchburg.

GREENSBORO -- Aprill McRae led five Aggies in doubles figures with a season-high 18 points as the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team cruised to a 99-32 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg Saturday afternoon.

It was the Aggies 10th straight win at Corbett Sports Center overall as they improved to 4-0 at home this season.

Ariel Bursey and Adriana Nazario had 15 points apiece. Christina Carter finished with 14 points and nine assists and Eboni Ross added 13 points and eight rebounds. Tracy King had eight steals. The Aggies forced a school-record 44 turnovers that resulted in 26 A&T steals.

Lady Pirates squeak past FAMU for first MEAC win

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team withstood a second-half push from Florida A&M Saturday evening at the HU Convocation Center, emerging with a 70-67 win to pick up their first conference victory of the season.

The Lady Pirates (6-3, 1-0 MEAC) have won 31 straight games against MEAC foes.

Senior forward Alyssa Bennett led three Lady Pirates in double figures with 22 points and nine rebounds, going 10-for-22 from the floor. Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added 15 points, and sophomore guard Ryan Jordan scored 13 points.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton dished out a team-high eight assists.

The Lady Pirates shot 38.9 percent (28-for-72) from the floor and made two of their 18 3-pointers. Hampton went 12-for-20 (60.0 percent) from the free throw line, and the Lady Pirates scored 16 points off of 24 Florida A&M turnovers.

Hampton also held a 40-28 edge on the glass.

FAMU (6-4, 1-1 MEAC) shot 42.6 percent (20-for-47) from the floor and made eight of its 20 3-pointers. Rubin led three Lady Rattlers in double figures with 24 points, while Grice added 21 points.

The Lady Pirates will return to the HU Convocation Center on Monday at 6 p.m. to take on Bethune-Cookman.

Lady Monarchs late surge downs Maryland Eastern Shore
 
NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team fell to the Lady Monarchs, 82-57, despite keeping the game close in the second half until ODU's late surge would give them the victory. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-5 overall while ODU improved to 5-4 on the season.
 
Shawnee Sweeney recorded 18 points and six boards while Jessica Long had 10 points and a team- high five assists. Alexis Udoji registered eight points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
 
For the Lady Monarchs, Shae Kelly posted a double-double with 24 points and 13 boards. Chelisa Painter added 14 points and eight rebounds while Tiffany Minor and Galaisha Goodhope each recorded 10 points in the win.
 
The Lady Hawks continue their seven-game road trip as they head to Norman, Okla. to face #15 Oklahoma on Sunday, Dec. 15th. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m.
