Men?s Basketball Recap: Dec. 5

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men’s basketball team set school records in both free throws and free throw attempts in a foul-infested 91-87 victory over Florida A&M Thursday night in the MEAC opener at Joseph Echols Hall.

The teams combined for 73 fouls, and NSU hit 41-of-62 overall from the foul line for the game. The Rattlers have 43 fouls called on them in a contest that took more than two hours and 20 minutes.

The Spartans improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference, their 20th-straight regular season MEAC victory. FAMU, fell to 2-6, 0-1.

The Rattlers’ 43 fouls and NSU’s 41 made free throws both stand as the second-most by a Division I team this year and the most in a regulation game. The Spartans broke their previous school records of 38 free throws and 58 attempts, set on Nov. 30, 1991 against West Virginia State at home.

The Spartans won despite not hitting a field goal and attempting only three in the last 7:20 of the game. NSU never had a double-digit lead in the second half but hit 21-of-26 from the foul line in that last stretch of the contest.
