Hampton drops home contest to American
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team suffered through a cold shooting night on Wednesday, falling 58-46 to American in the HU Convocation Center.
It was the Lady Pirates’ first home loss since the 2011-12 season, and it snapped the team’s 16-game home winning streak.
Senior guard Nicole Hamilton led the Lady Pirates (5-3) with 20 points on 8-for-18 shooting, while freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added nine points. Senior forward Alyssa Bennett and sophomore guard Ryan Jordan each added nine rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 25.8 percent (17-for-66) from the floor and made two of their 16 3-pointers. American shot 32.7 percent (16-for-49) from the floor, hit five of its 23 3-pointers (21.7 percent), and out-rebounded Hampton 51-38.
Alexis Dobbs led American (5-2) with 22 points.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they play host to MEAC foe Florida A&M at the HU Convocation Center at 4 p.m.

Lady Hornets Storm Back Late, Take Down George Mason in Overtime
DOVER, Del. – Facing a 10-point deficit with under two minutes play in regulation, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (3-3) battled back at home to force overtime, followed by a courageous effort in the extra period to defeat the George Mason Patriots (5-4), 90-83.
Four DSU players finished the game in double figures, led by Tierra Hawkins’ game-high 29 points (10-of-21) to secure her third double-double of the season. The Clinton, Md. native, also finished with a game-high two blocks.
Also, turning a performance double-double performance was Deanna Harmon with 14 points (6-of-13) and 10 rebounds while playing a game-high 43 minutes.
Raven Bankston finished the night with 18 points (6-of-15), while forward Tylinn Carter ended up with a career-high 10 points (3-fo-5), to go along with four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Diamond Washington dished a game-high eight assists and tallied four steals in addition to her eight points (1-of-5).
George Mason also had four players finish in double figures, led by Taylor Brown’s 20 points (6-of-19). Brown also added eight assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Guards Kyana Jacobs (4-of-8) and Cierra Strikland (3-of-5) both had 10 points, while Sandra Ngoie had 18 points (8-of-13) off the bench.
Delaware State will back in action this Saturday (2 p.m.) at home for its MEAC opener against Coppin State.
