NSU Suffers 94-50 Loss to JMU in JMU Invitational Championship Game

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison shot 46.3 percent from the floor to hand Norfolk State  a 94-50 loss in the championship game of the JMU Invitational on Monday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The loss drops NSU to 5-7 on the season, while JMU improves to 10-3.

For the game, the Spartans shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) and totaled 30 rebounds, while committing just 16 turnovers. The Dukes outscored NSU 42-20 in the paint and 32-25 in bench points.

Quineshia Leonard was the only Spartan to score in double-figures. Rachel Gordon tallied nine points and eight rebounds, Kieera Basey had eight points and Dominique Harper posted six points.

NSU returns to the court on Jan. 5 at the University of Pennsylvania. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa.

Lady Hawks fall on the road to South Carolina State in MEAC Opener

ORANGEBURG, S.C.  - In their 50th meeting, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team dropped their conference opener to the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University, 63-50. With the loss, the Lady Hawks fell to 3-9 overall (0-1 MEAC) whereas SC State improved to 2-8 (1-0 MEAC) on the season.

Jessica Long paced the Hawk attack with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Senior Breonna Evans recorded a career-high eight points, including two triples, while Ashleigh Claybrooks finished with seven points and 10 boards in a losing effort.

Other notable Hawk performances included Shanyce Stewart recording her 12th career 10-plus rebound game with a game-high 18 boards. With her efforts, she surpasses Adobi Agbasi with the second-most 10+ rebound performances since the 2005-06 season, trailing only April McBride (39).

For S.C. State, four Lady Bulldogs registered double-digit points, led by Kourtney Williams tallying 15 points while Cherisha Floyd and Lynasia Frazier each had 10 points. DayShaun Richbow chipped in 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the victory.

Lady Pirates struggle in second half, fall to Georgia Tech 

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Monday, as Georgia Tech used a strong second half to win 89-70 in the championship game of the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament in McCamish Pavilion.

Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 27 points, earning All-Tournament honors, while senior guard Nicole Hamilton added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Senior forward Alyssa Bennett added 12 points – 10 in the first half – and a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior guard Kenia Cole chipped in 11 points.

Cole was also named All-Tournament.

The Lady Pirates (10-4) shot 33.8 percent (22-for-65) from the floor and hit seven of their 16 3-pointers (43.8 percent). Georgia Tech shot 43.8 percent (28-for-64) from the floor and out-rebounded Hampton 45-40.

Tyaunna Marshall led the Yellow Jackets (10-3) with 22 points, while Kaela Davis added 19 points.

The Lady Pirates return to the HU Convocation Center on Wednesday to take on Virginia Tech at 4 p.m.
