Pirates Outlast Winthrop in Double Overtime 

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men’s basketball needed 10 extra minutes to snap its two-game skid on Sunday, outlasting Winthrop 101-95 in double overtime at the HU Convocation Center.

Hampton (6-7) scored 100 points in a game for the first time since Jan. 23, 2006, when the Pirates defeated Savannah State 100-57.

Senior forward Du’Vaughn Maxwell led five Pirates in double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Brian Darden added a career-high 19 points on five 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard Dwight Meikle added 16 points, while sophomore guard Deron Powers chipped in 13 points and redshirt-freshman guard Lawrence Cooks had 12 points.

The two teams were tied at 91-91 with 3:48 left in the second OT, before the Pirates scored four straight points to take a 95-91 lead with 1:26 left on a layup from Cooks. Winthrop cut the deficit to two twice, trailing 97-95 with 12 seconds to go.

But Powers and senior guard Ramon Mercado each hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the win for the Pirates in their first overtime game of the season.

Hampton outscored Winthrop 15-9 in the final five minutes.

UMES Hawks grounded by American Eagles, 71-58


PRINCESS ANNE, Md.
– In their final home contest of the 2013 calendar year, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team fell to American University, 71-58, on Sunday afternoon. UMES has now lost two consecutive contests to American as the Hawks fell for the first time at home in their history against American. With the decision, UMES drops to 2-8, while American ups its record to 4-7.

UMES and American found themselves deadlocked in a 4-4 tie at the 17:38 mark, before the Eagles scored 11 unanswered points to take a 15-4 lead. The teams would trade baskets for the next eight minutes, before the Hawks would go on an 8-4 run to bring themselves to within six points of the Eagles.

American upped its lead to 15 after scoring seven of the games next eight points, but a three-pointer by junior KyRee Jones with one second left in the frame made the score 39-27 at half. Jones led the men with a team-high eight points at the break. John Schoof hit three long range shots to accumulate a game-high 13 points at half, while Kyle Kager brought down four boards and dished out two assists.

Freshman Hakeem Baxter made a layup to begin the second to bring UMES to within 10. The game continued with each team countering the others push as the advantage stayed relatively the same until the five minute mark. The Hawks used another layup by Baxter to cap an 8-1 run to bring the Hawks to within seven, 59-52.
