Miami Downs Lady Bears In Miami Holiday Tournament Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Keyona Hayes recorded a double-double with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Miami players in double figures scoring, as the host Hurricanes defeated Morgan State, 80-42 in the opener of the Miami Holiday Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the BankUnited Center.

Miami advances to the title game on Sunday at 3 p.m. to take on New Mexico game. Morgan State will face Western Carolina in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Krystal Saunders connected on five three-pointers to score 15 points, while Maria Brown came off the bench to score 15 for the Canes, who improved to 7-4 with the win. Jassany Williams also tallied a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Adrienne Motley added 10 points.

Morgan State (2-8) was led by Tracey Carrington, who scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.

Morgan State finished the game shooting 15-of-50 (30 percent) from the floor and failed to connect on a three-pointer in six attempts. The Lady Bears hit 12-of-17 (70 percent) from the free throw line.

The Hurricanes hit 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the floor, including 5-of-30 from three-point range. Miami went 13-of-19 from the charity stripe for 68.4 percent.

Miami out rebounded the Lady Bears 49-37 for the game and held a 28-9 advantage over Morgan State in bench points and 22-7 in second chance points.

Coppin State falls to Virginia, will meet Alabama on Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Coppin State women’s basketball team dropped a 70-45 decision to the University of Virginia in the opening round of the Cavalier Classic Saturday afternoon at JPJ Arena.

Coppin State was led by seniors Kyra Coleman (16 points) and Larissa Carter (14 points). Sophomore forward Jordan Swails sprang off the bench to grab a team-high seven rebounds. The Eagles played tenacious defense for much of the game and forced the Cavaliers into 22 turnovers.

Coppin State will meet the University of Alabama at noon on Sunday in the consolation contest.

Lady Rattlers drop contest to Wake Forest

MIAMI, Fla. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (6-8, 1-1 MEAC) dropped a testy battle in South Florida to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (8-4, 0-0 ACC), 79-63 at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on the campus of FIU, in the first round of the Fun& Sun Classic.

The Lady Rattlers were led by Jasmine Grice as scored 20 points on 7-of-20 shooting from the field.  She was also one of the team leaders with seven rebounds and added five steals to her line.  Taneka Rubin poured in 16 points on 5-of-18 shooting, while Kimberly Sparkman chipped in 14 on 6-of-10 shooting.  Rubin pulled down seven rebounds, as did Ann Marie Harris.

Wake Forest was led by Dearica Hamby, who hit for 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting.  Chelsea Douglas added 13 and Ataijah Taylor closed out the double-digit scorers with 10.  Hamby dominated the boards, using her lengthy frame to haul in 18 rebounds.  No other play grabbed double digit rebounds in the game.

FAMU shot 32.4 percent for the game, while WF shot a scorching 50 percent.  54 of the Demon Deacon points came in the paint, eclipsing FAMU’s 28 points.  WF also had 30 points contributed by their bench to 19 for FAMU.

The Lady Rattlers will play in the consolation game tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they will face Farleigh Dickinson at the U.S. Century Bank Arena.
