Grice paces Florida A&M in loss to VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth handed the Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team, a 94-67 loss, here Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

FAMU (6-7) had a pair of Lady Rattlers to score in double-figures with Jasmine Grice finishing the contest with a double-double as Grice scored a team high 15 points and pulled down a team high 13 rebounds.  In addition, she dished out a team high six assists.

VCU (10-1) had four Rams to finish the contest in double-figures with Robyn Sparks scoring a game high 25 points to lead all scorers.  Zakia Williams pumped in 14 points, followed by Jessica Pellechio with 12 and Isis Thorpe with 11.  Parks led Rams in rebounding with nine boards, while Keira Robinson dished out a game high nine assists.

Rubin gave the Lady Rattlers a 6-2 lead with a made jumper with 17:03 to go in the first. 

VCU would take an 11-9 lead on a Williams, free throw with 12:52 to go in the half, capping a 9-3 run by the Rams.

A Robinson layup with 7:41 to go in the first would extend the Rams’ lead to 26-16, capping a 14-5 run by VCU.

The Lady Rattlers would cut Rams’ lead to 28-26 as FAMU used a 10-2 run, capped off by a Jamie Foreman layup with 5:11 to go in the half.

Rubin would score the Lady Rattlers final points of the half with a three pointer at the 1:07 mark as FAMU would go into the break trailing VCU, 35-29.

The Lady Rattlers finished the first half shooting 48.0 percent (12-of-25), whereas the Rams shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31).

VCU would outscore FAMU 59-38 in the second half for the 94-67 finale.

FAMU finished the game shooting 46.3 percent (25-of-54), while VCU shot 51.5 percent (35-of-68).

The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Sat. December 28 as they will take on Wake Forrest in their first game of the FIU Tournament at the U.S. Century Bank Arena in Miami, Fla., in an 8 p.m. start.
