Lady Pirates outlast Kansas State in double overtime 

HAMPTON, Va. – Another halftime deficit, another spirited comeback – only this one took a little longer for the Hampton University women’s basketball team, which needed two overtimes to come back and beat Kansas State 86-75 at the HU Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (9-3) have won four straight games.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton and senior forward Alyssa Bennett each had 24 points to lead the Lady Pirates, and Bennett added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.

Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added 19 points, while redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates shot 32.1 percent (26-for-81) from the floor and made six of their 23 3-pointers (26.1 percent). Hampton went 28-for-44 (63.6 percent) from the free throw line, but made all six at the charity stripe in the second overtime.

Hampton also out-rebounded K-State 59-53.

The Wildcats (5-4) shot 36.2 percent (25-for-69) from the floor and made seven of 27 3-pointers (25.9 percent) – making just three of 17 shots from behind the arc after the half.

Katya Leick led three Wildcats in double figures with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will be in Atlanta, Ga. on Dec. 29-30 to compete in the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament.

Murray State Edges Bethune-Cookman, 81-70

DeLAND, Fla. – Keiona Kirby scored a game-high 28 points and Jessica Winfrey added 16 to help Murray State defeat Bethune-Cookman by a count of 81-70 in the final game of the 2013 Hatter Classic on Saturday afternoon from the Edmunds Center. For Bethune-Cookman, senior Chastity René Taylor was selected to the all-tournament team, averaging 16 points and five rebounds in two games for the Wildcats.

Murray State used 28 points from Kirby, connecting on 4-of-10 shots from long range, as well as a 12-of-14 performance at the foul line. Winfrey registered a double-double with 16 points and 18 boards (10 defensive); while Porter contributed 13 points off the bench.

Bethune-Cookman dominated the post with a 40-20 advantage on points in the paint, but just a 3-for-16 effort from the three-point area proved to be the difference. The Wildcats shot 92.9 percent from the foul line, and led in second chance points (16-11), despite being outrebounded by a slim 45-42 margin.

Alea Godfrey and Shakeyia Colyer paced the Wildcats offensively with 11 points each, and Kiara Redmon provided 10 points and seven rebounds. Taylor picked up a season-high seven rebounds from her guard position, despite being harassed all game defensively from the Racers’ defensive exploits.

For Godfrey, the 10-point outburst was a season-high for the Barrett Station, Texas native.

Bethune-Cookman will break for the holidays before returning to the friendly confines of Moore Gymnasium for a nonconference matchup with East Carolina on Dec. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Carter and Coleman lead Coppin State in setback

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State University senior forwards Larrisa Carter and Kyra Coleman combined for 31 points and 17 rebounds during a 64-42 setback to American University Saturday afternoon at the
Physical Education Complex.

Carter scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Eagles in scoring for the second straight game. She also hauled down eight rebounds. It was the 38th time in Carter’s career she scored at least 10 points in a
game. Meanwhile, Coleman added 15 points and nine points for Coppin State, which lost its first game at home this season. It was the 40th time in Coleman’s career she has reached double figures.

Sophomore Janelle Lane also had nine rebounds for Coppin State (4-6 overall). Junior Bria Harris added eight rebounds for the Eagles. Harris, Carter, Coleman and Lane helped the Eagles win the rebounding battle, 47-31. American had entered the game outrebounding its opponents by five a game.

The Eagles defense was strong throughout as they held their second straight opponent below 70 points. Coppin State has not allowed a team to score 70 points at home this season. Sophomore guard Amber Griffin recorded a blocked shot during the second half.

American (7-3) was led by senior Alexis Dobbs’ double-double of 10 points and 10 assists. Dobbs also added seven rebounds and five steals. Shaquilla Curtis scored 14 points for American, members of the
Patriot League.

Coppin State returns to action Saturday when it meets the University of Virginia Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the Cavalier Classic. Princeton meets Alabama in the opening game at noon. Virginia will be the fourth Atlantic Coast Conference team that Coppin State will play this season.

Lady Hawks unable to recover from Mount St. Mary’s strong shooting performance

EMMITSBURG, Md.  - In their 12th meeting, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team ran into a hot shooting Mount St. Mary's team as the Lady Hawks fell, 85-61. With the loss, UMES falls to 3-8 overall while The Mount improved to 5-6 on the season.

For the Lady Hawks, three players recorded double-digit points, led by junior guard Shawnee Sweeney pacing UMES with 17 points, including five three-pointers. With her performance, Sweeney has nailed five triples in back-to-back contests. Alexis Udoji and Chalyse Taylor each notched 10 points in the loss.

Other Hawk performances included Jessica Long posting nine points and a game-high six assists, while Ashleigh Claybrooks scored eight points off the bench.

For the Mount, the team shot a scorching 52% from the floor (29-for-56) while two players scored 20+ points, led by Ashley Christie and Sydney Henderson. Christie had a game-high 22 points, including 4-for-5 from the arc, whereas Henderson finished with 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting. Kayla Grossett recorded a double-double, 10 points and 11 boards, in the victory.

The Lady Hawks continue their seven-game road trip as they open conference play against the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University on Dec. 30th. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. (EST)

Miscues, Poor Shooting Plague DSU in 62-47 Loss at Marshall to Complete Road Trip

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
Looking to snap a three-game skid, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (3-7) fell 62-47 to the Marshall Thundering Herd (5-5), in what the final contest of a season-long three-game road trip for the Lady Hornets.

With this loss, DSU dropped its fourth consecutive game, its longest losing skid of the season.

Making her first start after missing the last two games due a shoulder injury, leading scorer (21.5 ppg) and rebounder (9.4 rpg), Tierra Hawkins, scored the first basket of the game at the 19:35 mark.

Raven Bankston finished with 21 points on a tough 8-for-24 (.333) output from the field, including a 2-of-9 performance from beyond the arc.  She also committed a game-high seven turnovers and pulled down five rebounds.

Hawkins, on the other hand, recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points (4-of-14) and 13 rebounds, as the Lady Hornets won the battle on the boards (42-37).

For Marshall, three players scored in double figures, led by guard Norrisha Victrum (16 points), who went 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Victrum also finished with a team-high four assists and a game-high three steals, whereas Scott totaled 13 points (5-of-9) and forward Suporia Dickens tallied 11 points (5-of-11) and three steals. On the glass, forward Chelsey Romero recorded a game-high 14 rebounds and three blocks, to go along with four points.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will be back in action at home on Dec. 29 (2 p.m.) against St. Francis.
