NSU Blows Past Virginia University-Lynchburg 116-40

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior forward Rachel Gordon posted her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Norfolk State past Virginia University-Lynchburg 116-40 at Joseph Echols Hall on Friday afternoon. The last time NSU held an opponent to 40 points was last season when the Spartans defeated Bethune-Cookman, 67-40 on March 2.

The 76 point win was the largest margin of victory for the Spartans (4-6) since they defeated St. Paul’s by 83 points on Jan. 16, 1996. The win also set a Division-I record for the Spartans and ranks fifth all-time in NSU’s record book.

Gordon made all eight of her field-goals and shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the free throw line. Five other Spartans also finished the game in double-figures. Junior Ebony Brown contributed 18 points and three assists. Brown was 4-of-6 from 3-point range on the afternoon. Junior Rae Corbo tallied 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman Logan Powell had a season-high 14 points to go along with her eight rebounds. Junior Quineshia Leonard scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Freshman Dominique Harper rounded out the scoring effort for NSU with 10 points and a season-high nine assists.

Freshman Amber Brown, who had a season-high nine points and four rebounds, knocked down the last bucket for the Spartans with 10 seconds on the clock. Brown shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the field.

The Spartans shot 63.2 percent (48-of-76) on the afternoon and were 7-of-16 from 3-point range. NSU also finished the night shooting 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

The Spartans outrebounded VUL, 53-29. NSU also posted 32 assists, which set another Division-I record for NSU. The last time NSU had at least 20 assists in Division–I was in the game against Morgan State on Jan. 14, 2012. The Spartans finished that game with 23 assists.

VUL finished the game shooting 24.6 percent (15-of-61) and was 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the free throw line. Sierra Thomas led the Lady Dragons with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists.  

NSU will head to Harrisonburg, Va., on Dec. 29 to take on UMBC at the James Madison Invitational. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.

Bethune-Cookman Falls to Nicholls State, 73-56

DeLAND, Fla. – Chastity René Taylor scored a game-high 25 points, but it was not enough as Bethune-Cookman fell to Nicholls State, 73-56, on Friday afternoon from the Edmunds Center. The game was part of the 2013 Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University.

Nicholls State was led offensively by KK Babin’s 17 points, combining with Lilly’s 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while recording five rebounds and two steals. Emani White scored 11 points and handed out a game-high nine assists, and teammate Nash scored 10 to round out the four players in double-figures for the Colonels.

 Bethune-Cookman was led by Taylor’s season-high 25 points. The Desoto, Texas native scored 18 of those in the first half as Nicholls State turned its attention solely to her in the second half. Taylor would add four assists and three rebounds in another solid performance, finishing the game 7-of-8 from the foul line and playing 39 out of a possible 40 minutes for the Maroon and Gold.

 Colyer added 10 points and four assists for B-CU, and it was Gibson providing eight points and three assists off the bench – all in the second half.

 Bethune-Cookman concludes play at the Hatter Classic on Saturday at 3 p.m., as the Wildcats take on Murray State back at the Edmunds Center. Murray State fell to homestanding Stetson in the day’s earlier contest by a score of 103-72.
