Strakova named AVCA Honorable Mention All-American

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Hampton University junior rightside Vendula Strakova was named Honorable Mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), which announced its Division I All-America Teams on Wednesday.

Strakova is the first Hampton player ever to be recognized by the AVCA’s All-America awards.

Strakova led the Lady Pirates to their first-ever MEAC Tournament championship this season, and she was the first Lady Pirate ever to be named MEAC Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player at the MEAC Tournament.

Through the first weekend of NCAA play, Strakova led the nation in points (6.51 per set), and was second among all Division I players in kills (5.59 per set). She is also fourth in the nation in aces (0.58 per set).

With 626 kills this season, Strakova has 1,034 for her Hampton career, ranking her fifth in program history. She is averaging 5.25 kills per set in her career, the best average in program history, and she holds single-season program records for kills (626) and kills per set (5.59).

She hit .311 this past season, the second-best single-season hitting percentage in program history, and her .300 career hitting percentage with the Lady Pirates is the school’s all-time mark.

Strakova also had 65 aces this past season, the fifth-highest single-season total in program history. She also holds school records for kills in a three-set match (26 against South Dakota State, Sept. 20, 2013), a four-set match (31 against Maryland Eastern Shore, Nov. 11, 2012), and a five-set match (33 against William & Mary, Sept. 24, 2013).

Strakova had 13 double-doubles on the season.

Led by Strakova, the Lady Pirates tied a program Div. I record for wins in a season (19) and set a new program Div. I record for conference wins in a season (10). Hampton was the regular-season champion of the MEAC Northern Division.
