Morgan Falls To Howard on Senior Night, 3-1; Must Now Wait For MEAC Championship Fate

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The outcome of Friday evening’s season finale against Beltway rival Howard didn’t end the way the Lady Bears had planned or hoped to close out the season on Senior Night. Instead, it was the Lady Bison walking away with a 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 25-15, 25-17) road win in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division contest at Hill Field House.

Morgan State (12-13, 7-5 MEAC), which entered the contest looking to sweep this season’s MEAC series with the Lady Bison and secure the No. 2 seed in the division, dropped to fourth with the loss. Only the top four teams in the division advance to the league championship.

The Lady Bears will now have to play the waiting game and hope that Delaware State can knock off Norfolk State (which holds the tie-breaker over Morgan State) on Sunday and Coppin defeats Howard. If Norfolk State were to beat Delaware State and Howard beats Coppin State, then that would create a three-way tie between Morgan State, Coppin State and Norfolk State. In that case the Lady Bears would be eliminated.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bison improved to 20-9 overall and 8-3 in MEAC play and remained in second-place. They can solidify the No. 2 spot with a win over Coppin State on Sunday.

Zuri Smith tallied a match-high 14 kills, while Samantha Prescott fell shy of a double-double, finishing with nine kills and 12 digs. Arianna Hayden led the Lady Bears with a match-high 18 digs. Senior Ngebui Chafeh recorded a match-high 33 assists and added three kills on five attempts for a team-high hitting percentage of .600 in her final home contest. Fellow senior Janelle Wilson finished with five kills, an assist, a dig and a block in her last outing at home.

Howard was led by Meagan Lagerlef, who finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Assata Conway tallied nine kills to help Howard earn a conference split with the Lady Bears and win the season series, 2-1. The two teams also met earlier in the season at the Providence Friar Classic with Howard winning in five sets. Katherine Broussard had a team-high 12 digs and added eight kills, while Stephanie Shultis finished with 31 assists and eight kills on the evening. Allyson Lods collected 10 digs.
