FAMU edges Jacksonville 69-64 in home opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team got their first win of the season as the Lady Rattlers pulled out a 69-64 season opening win over Jacksonville University, here Friday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU had four Lady Rattlers to finish in double digit scoring as Jasmine Grice scored team high 16 points, followed by Taneka Rubin with 11, while both Patrice Collie and Adenike Dawodu finished with 10 points each.    Foreman led the team in board with eight, while Grice dished out a four dish assists.

JU was paced by Sherranda Reddick as she scored a game high 26 points to lead all scorers, while Queen Alford finished with 10 point rounding out the cast of double-digit scorers for the Dolphins.  Briona Brown tallied game high 11 boards, whereas Ronsiha Mitchell dished out a game high six assists.

Grice clinched the win for FAMU as she connected on a pair of free throws with 19 seconds in the contest for the 69-64 finale.

Coleman Scores 19 as Coppin State falls at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA -- Senior Kyra Coleman scored a team-high 19 points, but Georgia Tech spoiled the Eagles season opener with a 79-57 victory over Coppin State on Friday in McCamish Pavilion.

Coleman finished the game 6-of-14 from the field and also had five rebounds and four assists to pace the Eagles. Larrisa Carter had 13 points and six rebounds, while Bria Harris scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Kaela Davis posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech, while Nanah Taylor added 14 points and Aaliyah Whiteside scored 10 points.

Georgia Tech shot 44.4 percent from the floor for the game and limited Coppin State to just 31.1 percent shooting. The Yellow Jackets also outscored the Eagles 39-9 off the bench.

The game was tight for much of the first period until Georgia Tech pulled away with a run late in the period.

Robinson and Parker lead Morehead State past Norfolk State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Senior guard Terrice Robinson scored a game-high 19 points, while senior guard Shanice Parker recorded career highs of 15 points and five steals to lead the Morehead State women's basketball team to a 73-67 win over visiting Norfolk State in both team's season openers Friday afternoon.


Morehead State won its season lid-lifter for the first time since 2005-06. The Eagles vaulted to as much as a 15-point lead in the second half but held on despite the visitors cutting their cushion to as low as two.

Junior guard Almesha Jones added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Robinson also tallied five steals. The OVC's third-leading returning scorer secured her 31st career double-figure point output. Senior guard Tyler Ituen grabbed a team-best nine rebounds and swiped four steals.

Norfolk State's Quineshia Leonard produced a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rae Corbo led the Spartans with 17 points. NSU out-rebounded MSU 49-40 and had 19 offensive boards. The Spartans also held a 31-22 advantage at the free throw line.

USC-Upstate holds off the Lady Hawks' late rally to win opener

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In their first-ever meeting, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and South Carolina-Upstate (USC-Upstate) put on a show as the Spartans held off the Lady Hawks, 87-83, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

After trailing 50-40 at halftime, the Lady Hawks rallied and took the lead, 72-71, with just under eight minutes remaining. With less than one minute remaining, the Lady Hawks held an one point lead, 83-82. USC-Upstate would retake the lead late and win the game, 87-83. With the loss, UMES dropped to 0-1 overall while USC-Upstate improved to 1-0 on the young season.

Four Lady Hawks scored double-digit points, led by guards Jessica Long and TeAmber Burke. Long and Burke each tallied 17 points while Shawnee Sweeney recorded 16 points, including a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. Ashleigh Claybrooks added 12 points and grabbed six boards (four offensive). Senior Shanyce Stewart paced all rebounders with a game-high 13 rebounds (six offensive) and Alexis Udoji pulled down 11 boards.

For USC-Upstate, three Spartans scored double-figured points, led by Sharmayne Edwards (24). Shelby Hicks had a team-high nine boards while Toni Romiti tallied four assists in the win.
