HAMPTON, Va. – Throughout the month of October, the Hampton University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, exceeding its fundraising goal for the month.
SAAC hoped to raise $500 in October; the final tally came in at $760.
“I’m glad that SAAC exceeded its goal and that so many student-athletes, athletic staff, and the university community supported our cause against breast cancer,” Kerissa Burruel, the Vice President of SAAC and Community Service Chair, said.
SAAC members and other Hampton student-athletes raised money though hosting a penny drive and selling pink wristbands that read, “HU Pirates Against Cancer.” SAAC also handed out brochures for Breast Cancer Awareness during the Dig Pink volleyball match (against Norfolk State on Oct. 20) and at the Think Pink football game (against Delaware State on Oct. 26).
The money raised will go to the Tidewater affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
