MEAC Announces Volleyball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va., November 4, 2013 – Coppin State sophomore Denali Sturgeon was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Sonia Rosales earned Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.

Sturgeon (OH, 5-10, So., San Antonio, Texas) registered a career-high 16 kills against Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore. She totaled 32 kills (5.33 avg./set), while hitting .519. She averaged 1.67 digs and 0.33 blocks to aide the Eagles to its first winning season in MEAC play with a record of 7-4.

Rosales (S, 5-9, Fr., Victorville, Calif.) totaled 65 assists (9.29 avg./set), six digs and four kills in matches against Morgan State and Coppin State. She recorded 35 assists in a loss to Morgan State.

Other Top Performers: 

Katherine Broussard (Howard) registered 17 kills and 10 digs in a come-from-behind victory against Norfolk State.

Ginna Lopez-Chavez (FAMU) recorded her highest hitting percentage (.769) with 11 of 13 kills against North Carolina Central.

Goda Jankauskaite (NSU) finished with 17 kills, hitting .324, against Howard.

Jingqiao Li (UMES) set a new conference high this season with 39 digs against Morgan State.

Haley McClure (MSU) tallied 12 kills, three digs, one block and one ace in a win at Delaware State.

Samantha Prescott (MSU) registered a match-high 21 kills, seven digs, three aces and two blocks in a win at Delaware State.

Kalin Russell (NCCU) finished with a career-high 18 kills and a career-best eight blocks against Bethune-Cookman.

Vendula Strakova (Hampton) recorded 19 kills and 14 digs, her 13th double-double of the season, in a win against Howard.

Desire Waller (SCSU) registered 29 kills and 13 digs in a non-conference match against Charleston Southern.
