Hawks end the FDU New Jersey Jamboree with a perfect 2-0 record
ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) didn't have the tournament they had hoped, but they ended it on a high note, going a perfect 2-0 on the final day of the New Jersey Jamboree to end the tournament with a 9-3 overall record and finish in ninth place overall.
Ending day two in ninth place, UMES was unable to move up the bracket as only the top eight teams can climb. However, they made the most of their event, topping both Valparaiso and Adelphi on the final day.
UMES first took on the Crusaders of Valpo. The Hawks struggled initially, falling in game one 193-150 and in game two 200-183. They quickly got it together in game three. Needing a strike in the tenth to tie, they got it, Brooklyn style, as Sara Pelayo crossed over to tie game three at 172.
That was the momentum swing they needed. The Hawks took game four 213-196, game five 170-140, game six 186-169 and a dominant showing in game seven 231-170 to claim the 4.5-2.5 win. UMES knocked down 65 more pins along the way, 1305-1240.
UMES then faced Adelphi. After spotting them one game (182-168), the Hawks tossed a 191-150 win in game two. Adelphi took the lead right back in game three 207-189. UMES locked down from there to win game four, 193 -158, game five, 228 -189 and game six, 207 -145. The final pin tally was a commanding 1176-1031 in favor of UMES.
Stephen F. Austin won the event for their second straight tournament win, posting a 10-2 record in the event. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater moved up the bracket to take second but went just 8-5. Host Fairleigh Dickinson was third with a 10-3 mark and Arkansas State went 9-4 to take fourth place.
Kutztown was fifth (9-3), Vanderbilt was sixth (7-5), Sam Houston State was seventh (9-4), Sacred Heart was eighth (5-8), UMES ninth and Adelphi (6-6) rounded out the top ten. Despite the finish the Hawks had a better record than five of the other top ten teams.
The last time UMES finished as low as ninth was November 27, 2005 when they were ninth in the National Team Match Games in a field of 30 teams.
Pelayo was the star of the day and tournament for UMES as she was clutch as anchor on Sunday and on Saturday was their highest finisher at 18th overall with a 193 average. Mariana Alvarado was 47th overall, bowling in just five of the six games. Her average however was solid at a 196.2. Valerie Riggin was also solid with a 198.25 average over her four games.
Pelayo was seventh overall in the Red Poll standings with Alvarado being 21st, tallying more pins in five games than seven other bowlers did in all six.
