Tate’DeFreitas scores 36 as Hampton advances to CNU Thanksgiving Classic title game
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas and senior forward Alyssa Bennett each had career days on Friday, as the Hampton University women’s basketball team outlasted Utah State 98-88 in the Matadome to open the Cal State Northridge Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Classic.
Tate-DeFreitas poured in a career-high 36 points on 12-for-25 shooting (and 6-for-11 from distance), while Bennett set career highs in points (26) and rebounds (17) in recording her third double-double of the season.
Senior guard Nicole Hamilton added 14 points and 12 assists.
The Lady Pirates (4-2) handed Utah State its first loss of the season. Tate-DeFreitas is the first Lady Pirate to score 30 points or more in a game since Keiara Avant netted 32 at Morgan State last season.
She also set career highs in field goals made, field goals attempted, and 3-pointers made.
The Lady Pirates shot 46.7 percent (35-for-75) from the floor and made 11 of their 25 3-pointers (44.0 percent). Hampton also held a 50-40 edge on the glass, while also scoring 27 points off of 16 Utah State turnovers.
Hampton’s 98 points were the most scored in a game in the David Six era.
Utah State (4-1) shot 43.8 percent (32-for-73) from the floor and made 12 of its 29 3-pointers (41.4 percent). Vaaulu led four Aggies in double figures with 27 points.
The Lady Pirates will play for the CSUN Thanksgiving Classic title on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. EST, taking on either Santa Clara or Cal State Northridge.

UTPA Tops NSU 50-36 at UTSA Thanksgiving Classic
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Norfolk State women’s basketball team suffered a 50-36 loss to the University of Texas-Pan American on Friday night at the Convocation Center. Junior Quineshia Leonard led the Spartans with nine points and eight rebounds.
NSU dropped to 2-3 on the season and UTPA moved to 3-2.
Senior Rachel Gordon tallied a career-high 26 rebounds and also contributed six points. Gordon only needed two rebounds in tonight’s game to move into eighth place in the NSU record book for career rebounds. She now has 794 career rebounds.
The Spartans shot 24.2 percent (15-of-62) from the field and only 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from the free throw line. For the first time this season there were no Spartans in double-figures. Freshman Dominique Harper finished with eight points and one steal. Kieera Basey posted six points and two assists.
The Broncs were 18-of-66 (27.3 percent) on the night and shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from free throw line. Goff led all scorers with 14 points and five rebounds. Bush also added eight points.
NSU will play UT-San Antonio on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. eastern standard time and 8 p.m. central standard time at the Convocation Center.

FAMU rallies past Eastern Kentucky for 64-58 win Friday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Florida A&M Women's Basketball team won their fourth straight as the Lady Rattlers defeated Western Kentucky, 64-58, here Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum in their first game of the Southern Mississippi Thanksgiving Tournament.
FAMU (5-1) was led by Jasmine Grice as she scored a team high 25 points with 10 of them coming from the charity stripe. Taneka Rubin was the only other Lady Rattler to score double-figures with 10. Grice led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with eight.
EKU (3-4) was led by both Shelly Harper and Marie Carpenter as they both finished with 16 points each, while both Miranda Maples and Nicole Bowers led Lady Colonels on the boards with 10 each.
FAMU will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 as they will take on the University of Southern Mississippi in their final game of the USM Thanksgiving Tournament at Reed Coliseum.
