Hampton sweeps Howard in key MEAC Northern Division match

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team bid farewell to its five seniors in style on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Howard 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-23) in its home finale at Holland Hall.

The win stopped a two-match skid for the Lady Pirates (14-10, 8-2 MEAC).

Junior rightside Vendulas Strakova led the way with 19 kills, hitting a team-best .421 thanks to just three errors in 38 total attempts. She also had a team-high 14 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.

Junior outside hitter Sonja Maksimovic added seven kills, while junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura had six kills.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca had 29 of Hampton’s 35 assists.

The Lady Pirates hit .323 (41 kills, nine errors in 99 attacks) for the match, while holding Howard to just .085 (29 kills, 21 errors in 94 attacks). Howard held a 5-4 edge in service aces and a 5.0-3.0 advantage in blocks.

Katherine Broussard led Howard with nine kills.

Coppin State Volleyball Sets School Record for Conference Wins

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Sophomore Denali Sturgeon tied her career high with 16 kills and Coppin State broke the school record for conference wins in a season with a 25-16, 26-24, 25-11 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday in W.P. Hytche Center.


It was a record-setting afternoon for the Coppin State volleyball team. CSU improved to 7-4 in the MEAC with the win, which broke the school record of six victories set last season and guaranteed its first MEAC winning season in school history.

Additionally, Coppin State improved to 11-15 on the season, which tied the school record for wins in a season. The Eagles will have two more regular season opportunities and at least one match in the conference tournament to establish a new school record.

Sturgeon racked up 16 kills for the second consecutive match to lead the Eagles to the sweep of the Hawks. She also had eight digs and recorded a .483 attack percentage.

Coppin State, under the direction of setter Chelsee Sauni, had a season-best .454 hitting percentage as a team.

The Eagles also received eight kills each from Ariel Richard and Kandace Thomas, while Cindy Okpegbue added seven kills.

Gabrielle Otero led Coppin State with 17 digs, while Nicole Malave had 13 digs.

Maryland Eastern Shore (3-19, 2-8 MEAC) was led by Diara Lewis who had 10 kills.

Hornets drop MEAC contest to Morgan State

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State volleyball team came up short in a bid for its first MEAC North win of the season. The Hornets fell to Morgan State 3-1 in Memorial Hall this afternoon.


The Bears won the first two games, 25-21 and 25-12. DSU stayed alive with a 25-23 win in game three. Morgan State claimed the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth game.

Three Morgan State players reached double figures in kills, led by Samantha Prescott’s match-high 21. Haley McClure had 12 kills, while Zuri Smith added 10 for the Bears. Natalie Chafeh led all players with 47 assists for MSU.

Jessica Croucher had a double-double for Delaware State, leading the Hornets with 15 kills and 10 digs. Jasmine Jackson added 10 kills, while Natalia Mendieta topped the team with 27 assists.

Morgan State was the better hitting team in the match. The Bears had a .368 hitting percentage in the contest (60 kills/18 errors/114 attacks).

Delaware State posted a .168 hitting percentage (36/18/107) in the match.
