Hawkins, Harmon Leads DSU Past Jaspers in 80-69 Victory for First Road Win

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Looking to avoid losing back-to-back games for the second time this season, the Delaware State women’s basketball (2-3) defeated the Manhattan Jaspers (1-4), 80-69, behind a career-high 34 points (14-of-22) by the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, Tierra Hawkins.

With this output, it was the second time in the last three games Hawkins has scored at least 30 points.

Forward Deanna Harmon turned in her best performance of the season with 18 points while going 6-of-7 (.857) from the floor and charity stripe.  The Owings Mills, Md. native, also dished out a game-high six assists, to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and two steals.

Also, scoring in double figures for DSU was Raven Bankston with 14 points (5-of-12), as she added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Delaware State shot a season-high 48 percent (31-of-64), including 54 points in the paint and 23 points off turnovers. On the glass, the Lady Hornets pulled down 41 rebounds, compared to Manhattan’s 34.

Four Manhattan players finished the game in double figures, led by Ashley Stec pouring in 17 points (8-of-12), while Kayla Grimme turned in a double-double performance with 10 points (3-of-10) and 10 rebounds.  Allison Skrec chipped in with 13 points (5-of-13) and Nicole Isaacs scored 16 (6-of-14).

Coming up, after the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Red & Columbia Blue will tipoff a two-game homestand, beginning with George Mason on Dec. 4 (5:30 p.m.).

Lady Pirates suffer heartbreaking loss at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit Tuesday night at The Thunderdome, but it wasn’t enough as UC-Santa Barbara escaped with a 66-62 win.

The Lady Pirates fell to 3-2 on the season.

Senior forward Alyssa Bennett led the Lady Pirates with 23 points – 21 of which came in the second half – and a career-high 16 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added 14 points.

Senior guard Nicole Hamilton chipped in 10 points and had a team-high six assists, while redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward grabbed 11 boards.

Hampton held a 46-30 edge on the glass.

UCSB (2-2) shot 42.0 percent (21-for-50) from the floor and went 20-for-25 from the free throw line. The Gauchos also turned 17 Hampton turnovers into 21 points.

Destini Mason led UCSB with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Nicole Nesbit added 11 points.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Friday, when they open the Cal State-Northridge Thanksgiving Classic against Utah State at 8 p.m. EST.

Maryland Eastern Shore holds off Lincoln

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team withstood a late rally to win their second consecutive game against the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University, 71-63, and improve to .500 on the season (3-3). Outstanding performances by Jessica Long, Alexis Udoji, and Shawnee Sweeney guided the team to victory.

Long registered her first-career double-double as she scored a game-high 24 points and a career-high 10 boards. Sweeney found her rhythm by scoring all her points in the second half and finished with 12 points, including a game- high three triples.

Other notable Hawk performances included Udoji recording her fourth-career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Senior Shanyce Stewart grabbed 20 boards, a new career-high and most for a UMES player since Tiffany Winkfield did it back in 2002 against Norfolk State.

For the Lions, they fell to 3-2 overall and were led by Cynthia Johnson. Johnson netted 19 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists, all team-highs, in the loss.

The Lady Hawks begin a seven-game road trip beginning in West Long Branch, NJ where Monmouth University awaits. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
