Long sinks game-winner as Maryland Eastern Shore edges George Mason

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team erased a double-digit deficit to defeat George Mason University, 93-91, in overtime.

The Lady Hawks picked up their first victory against the Patriots in the series after losing five consecutive, dating back to 1988. Also, this is the first win for UMES against an Atlantic-10 opponent under the Fred Batchelor era. With the win, the Lady Hawks improved to 2-3 overall while the Patriots dropped to 4-2.

Four Lady Hawks scored double-digit points, led by Jessica Long. Long registered 27 points, including the game-winner to propel UMES to victory. Long also recorded a career-high nine assists, the most assists in a single game by a UMES player since 2005 where Rachel Goodwin had nine against Bucknell. Sophomores Alexis Udoji and Ashleigh Claybrooks each registered a double-double. Udoji tallied a career-high 19 points and 11 boards while Claybrooks came off the bench and inked 14 points and a new career-high 12 rebounds in the victory.

With less than a minute-and-a-half to go in overtime, the Lady Hawks led, 88-86, until junior guard Shawnee Sweeney hit three clutch free-throws after being fouled to give UMES separation, 91-86. The Patriots rallied by scoring five straight points, including a three-pointer by George Mason's Reana Mohamed, to tie the game, 91-91.

After UMES' timeout, Long would get the ball and let the game clock dwindle down to five second before making her move to the basket where she would hit the game- winning floater and lift the Lady Hawks past George Mason.

The Lady Hawks return to the hardwood on Tuesday (11/26) where they will face Lincoln (PA) University at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m.
