NCCU Shocks N.C. State in Overtime for Historic Win

RALEIGH, N.C. – November 20, 2013 will be a date that the North Carolina Central University men’s basketball program will not soon forget, as the Eagles stunned the Wolfpack of NC State University 82-72 in overtime on Wednesday night at PNC Arena, as the maroon and gray earned their first victory over a school from the Atlantic Coast Conference since moving to the NCAA Division I level.

In the fifth meeting between these two programs, the Wolfpack came out strong to take hold to a 7-0 lead following a Ralston Turner three-pointer with 16:47 left in the first frame.

The Eagles chipped away at the small deficit by going on a 14-to-5 run to grab their first advantage of the evening on a Reggie Groves layup with 9:24 remaining.

Over the next 29 minutes, the Eagles never allowed NC State to officially grab the lead back, despite the seven ties, in the contest.

With the NCCU lead teetering around four points, back-to-back free throws by junior forward Karamo Jawara gave the Eagles its largest lead of the first half at 31-23 with 1:23 left, and saw the maroon and gray take a six-point lead into the locker room at 33-27 following an Emanuel Chapman runner off the left side.

With senior Jeremy Ingram saddled with three fouls in the first 20 minutes, the scoring load quickly moved over to Chapman who stepped it up with his patented floaters and drives to the basket, shooting 5-for-8 from the field, tying his career-high with 12 points to give NCCU the early edge.

Hawks control last two minutes of game, Baxter notches a career-high 22 points

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman guard Hakeem Baxter tallied a career-high 22 points to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team to a 78-71 win over Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday night. UMES is off to its best start offensively over the past 15 years as the Hawks have now scored 290 points in their first four games (72 ppg). With the victory, UMES evens its record at 2-2, while MSM drops to 0-5.

The Hawks and Mountaineers engaged in a tight battle for the majority of the game, but it was UMES that took control when it mattered most. While holding just a three-point lead with 1:49 to go, the Hawks went on an 11-4 run over the next minute and a half to take the victory. Baxter led all scorers with 22 points, but UMES had two others notch double-digit point totals in seniors Troy Snyder and Louis Bell.

The pair played to an even beat through the first 11 minutes of action as a layup by junior Isaac Smith evened the score at 14 at the nine minute mark. A three-pointer by Bell brought the UMES advantage to seven points, 27-20, before a layup by MSM ended the Hawks 11-4 run. The teams would go into halftime with UMES up by five, 27-22. MSM combined to shot 38-percent from the floor in the half, but the Hawks kept The Mount off the free-throw line and made seven freebies to hold the advantage.
